Doh!

It's "Microsoft Virtual PC". Would you expect it to work? Try VMWare instead, it is the "de facto" virtualization software. Not only that, they are the pioneers of virtualization which started just a few years ago (i still remember it beeing on sourcefourge and receiveing awards of project of the month).

I'm not sure it is a good idea to install ubuntu to a VM and then to copy it to a real pc

but couldn't you install the 5.10 one and then upgrade via the internet ?

Ubuntu 5.1+ am1772 chipset wifi PCI card == no installed drivers.

AF searches logn and ahrd and finds a driver, and downloads a driver for ubuntu from net on his XP then reboots to ubuntu 5.1.

AF starts following instructions.

At stage 2 of the compile process it gives errors about missing files.

Af realizes he must go get linux headers and stuff in the package manager.

Package manager needs to connect to the internet

AF is back to square 1

go find an ethernet cable

Posted: 12 Aug 2006, 23:28
by AF
AF has tried this

AF looks at his computer

AF looks at his stepdads comptuer downstairs

AF sees he needs an ethernet cable around the length of 20-30 metres

AF onyl has 5-10 metres of cabling

AF sees hsi 5-10 metres of cablign is infact made from 4-5 seperate cables

AF thinks about moving his computer

AF realizes such an action would probably end up with his computer in the bin with very angry parents

AF thinks about getting a long enough wire

AF thinks of angry parents complaining about wires hanging around the stairs.

You can download the packages alone.
sudo apt-get -d install package1 package2...
They will be located in /var/cache/apt/archives
Get them onto the Ubuntu machine (usb stick, floppy, cd, whatever) and they should be installable with ease.
