[NMF Experimentation] Largest Map Evar?

I just loaded up a 64x64 map in Spring... I used the default Dry.sm3 data for textures, so I didn't post any screenies, but it was unplayably slow on full viewradius, and I got some weird artifacts in the shading. I have a suckass computer, and I know that at least 128x128 maps are entirely possible, and completely doable on some peoples' computers; probably even 256x256! Has anyone else experimented with bigger maps?

ati cards can only support textures up to 2048x2048. Therefore, any person that has an ati graphics card cannot play on a map that is bigger than 32x32.

Thats pure bullshit. I don't know where your getting that from but I can play Epic seamlessly on my ATI Radeon 9600 128mb. Thats 40x40 btw.

Lordo, i take it you have shadows turned off?
ATI suers can play 32x32 or larger, but shadows on those maps wont work correctly for ATI users as the maximum size supported by ATI for shadow maps is 2048x2048, whereas nvidia supports much higher sizes.
So dont play 32x32 maps or larger if you want shadows turned on.

you != all ATI users.

Calm down.

Well of course, shadows look crappy anyways.

And I have played epic with shadows on...its not exactly impossible, it just looks weird.

Calm down.
What the...hell is that supposed to mean?

you text sounds all pissed off, maybe it is just your typing style but it seems like you are bent out of shape over this stuff.

in order, 'you don't represent the entirety of ATI users' and 'your engine knowledge is not near the SYs engine knowledge'

The "!=" read as "Not equal to."

I've done 64x64, with issues including shadows, on ATI.

Sorry, I just had to do that.

...With issues...
Dumbass.
Until ati decides to get it's act together, maps larger than 32x32 will have all kinds of issues with ati users.

shadows
shadows
shadows
Teehee, isnt this fun?
Dumbass.

And fordboding - let me quote your response.

Your wording means you are incorrect. You argued nothing about shadows or anything else.
smoth wrote:you text sounds all pissed off, maybe it is just your typing style
Jesus christ! Everything for you is confrontational. "your text sounds pissed off" - HUH?!?!
Wake up smoth, not everyone in this world is out to be argumentative like you <and forboding sometimes> >_>
and to try and keep this actually on topic.
has anyone done this with NVidia? (large maps)

Yeah, clearly. OMG WTF ATI U NOOBS AN OPEN SOURCE GMAE DOESNT RUN RITE ON UR CARDZ LOL.
It's also
clearly ATI's fault that the 9200 doesn't display text in Spring either. I mean, hell, while we're at it, it's their fault that it can't run Spring's reflective water either. I mean, hell, HL2 is just the odd game out, right? The one in a million? I think they sold their souls to the devil (ATI, LOL GET IT???) so their game would run properly on ATI cards!! It's a conspiracy! They're oppressing Spring, and by extension AA! Shits, guess we'll be burning down ATI's R&D lab next week then, because Multiplayer Water.. I mean spring is infallible!
