Host should be able, to set metal value of every map

Why not let the host define the metal value and metal extractor radius of every map? This would solve the speed metal problem (they could play every map with speed metal values :-D) and mappers just had to put some green areas (or spots) on the map, so host could define the value and radius.
The only problem i see here is, that you have to find out the optimal value of every map, but this could be solved by description. For example "thsis map should be played with metal value 0.3 and extractor radius 200" or so.
I think it would be easy to make.

as much as I like Spring getting neato features, I dislike this idea.
[edit]I'll elaborate a bit. In my opinion it's an insult to mappers to let people Speedmetal-ize any map they wish, in the same way as some modders can be insulted by the way people waste all their painstaking efforts and diligence to balance a mod, by playing it on Speedmetal.

that would be good, I think...

I agree with FizWizz on this one. The map makers place the metal spots where they want to give the map a certain style of play. If you were to change the extractor radius for instance, you could take control of metal patchs from farther.

Stop insulting mappers. They put alot of time and effort into making the map play right.

Okay, I take mine back, after thinking a little, I think it would be horrible!

It is not that hard to balance a mod to work in the current resource system. I shall not go any further then that.

I think a multiplier for metal patch output would work better especially if you're playing with a ressource hungry mod on a map with few ressources (but terrain you like). So if someone wants a slower start on a usually high-metal map he'd halve or quarter the output.

For extractor ranges I'd rather see an option for a mod to define a multiplier for each extractor's range so e.g. Mohos could cover a much bigger or smaller range.

I could see the mod based thing working out but then, why apply a multiplier to the metal whe one could simply reduce the costs instead?

Or change the ammount extractors extract in the mod. Seems to be the more logical way of doing it than changing a variable just before the game.

I disagree. I think this kind of thing should be client side available. However it should be limited to a host only .cheat command or something akin. Take example from halflife. Playing with server side variables you can almost compleatly change the way any given mod plays, yet most people don't want to play customized crap, they want to play the game the way it was meant to be played. However it is still available for testing purpouses and general customization if it should be needed.

the main aspect of this idea is, to make all maps much more variable, not to give speed metalers the choice of playing speed metal on all maps. There are a lot of maps around here, which look good, but people dont play them because of the wrong metal values. That is sad i think and could be solved by this feature. I really dont see what is wrong with it - no one forces you to use it if you dont like.
For example there is a map called planet mars or so, which is pretty good, but has much too much metal. I would like to be able to play it, but its just speed metal.

Edit @smoth: this idea has nothing to do with mods -.- Dont even try it.

give all players a handicap and you effectively impliment a multiplier so that feature is already there.

we need some sort of way to flatten everymap give it a lone chokepoint a shoddy texture and pointless mountains. then we should make a button called 'zomfg it r now goin9 2 b of teh 5p3edmet4|z' (which actually implodes your PC when pressed, this 'zomfg it r now goin9 2 b of teh 5p3edmet4|z' feature should be buried deep in code and innaccesable)

Speedmetal with 0.01x metal output? Set that on a server, lure in a few SM noobs and surprise them.

you want EVERY MAP TO BE ABLE TO BE PLAYED LIKE SPEEDMETAL?

doesnt it influence the energy income as well? And as far as i know you cant make an negative handycap, so it wont help me with the mars map for example, which has a too high metal value.

KDR is new to spring moding, I was talking TO HIM.

Owned.. D'oh. Lol I forgot about that option :P

part of the problem with speedmetal is that it also increases unit move speeds.
