You don't NEED the original Total Anhillation, but it would be more legal. And no this game is not nearly simmaler to the graphical requirments of War Craft III. It runs good, and looks much...much...much better.

How well Spring runs on your computer depends dramatically on the graphics settings you use. If you don't use the pizazz features (3D trees, reflective water, shadows or unit reflections) you don't need a very strong computer. You can run Spring on a computer with only a 1 Ghz CPU, but other players online really don't like it, and are liable to kick you out.

its not a totally old rock computer, but its not a top of the line gaming machine either, its just a basic compaq :O

It'll work. Just don't have dynamic water.

Disable shadows as well, or els it kills your poor comp when to many units are on the map.

Well, I can run War3 on highest with my 7900 GT, but that's not an option in Spring for me if I want playable FPS..
Does it look better? hell yeah, on a nice map with say nanoblobs(UV-mapped units r00ls!) and lots of FSAA it looks fantastic.

Yes you do need TA, but no one bothers about that. Luckily when Atari busts Spring, I'll be able to sit there playing OTA while they watch to prove I own it :D

No, you don't need OTA. Only when you play copywrited content.
Which meens you could play nanoblobs. And I think E&E is free of copywrited content as well.
(Though I do say the scripting and 3do file format could be copywrited as well)

If you have an old graphics card you won't even see dynamic/reflective water

... but in my opionion TA Spring is more graphic card intense than WC 3 at least for my GForce 4

Spring has been mentioned in PC Gamer when they were doing the preview of Supreme Commander. i think Atari would only really care if they were tying to make TA2 and felt threatened by Spring. Its highly doubtful that they'll make much more money off of OTA anyways anymore.

Indeed, but that doesn't stop them sueing an awful lot of members of the Spring community for copyright theft, Stealing and distrpbuting warez.
