Should users be allowed to login anonymously?

Ok guys, the idea came up a little while ago, and to be honest, I hadn't really considered it. Should users be allowed to login anonymously to the multiplayer server? Or should everyone register a handle and login with that. Either way, registration is happening, and is what the current system uses.

I don't suppose you can recall back to the guest posting days of insults flying from behind a mask of anoniminity.
Although you could just replace "Guest"/"Annonomous" with their IP.

Grah, forgot twice to hit the submit button!
Getting into the first game should be as simple as possible. Everytime you add a registration form, and required email, you lose potential player.
But it would be nice if a random name was assigned the first time you run Spring if you're too lazy to type one, and then having spring remember to use the same name on that computer until the user chose one. Nothing high-security, just so people too lazy to type a name are still more or less identifiable.

Well I was thinking... Anonymous_(#). The numbers will be passed out in sequential order, with recycling when one logs out, and no recollection of past login. That could potentially be a pain :) Right now, the registration will be simply "What username do you want, and what will your password be"

I would suggest killing the idea of centralized registration altogether.
We all know and have seen what happens when centralized systems are used for the very basis of a multiplayer experience (read: Valve)
Having anoynymous IP-to-IP games would be the best way to go on this, and have the registration be required ONLY for GW and ladder games and such.

anon ip-to-ip games are allowed. all the lobby will be doing is launching spring with a script setting everything up for you. the lobby's purpose is for people to meet, organize games, and have a central place to chat. Furthermore, all "battle rooms" are handled locally by the client, so you can launch ip/lan games from there without connecting to the master server.

If registration only requires you to pick a name and password, why would we lose players? Its just so that when in the game room people can say, Hay aGorm! Wanna play. Insted of going.... Hay, Is there an anonimus guy guy the name of agorm on teh boards here? Its just for recognition purposes. And it means you can keep track of whos won and lost teh most (read: aGorm, Wins: 1, Losses: 567..568....569...)
Letting people in anonimsly is crap and should not happen.
