Proof-Of-Concept: Stratos

This is not a real map, it's just a conceptual design, and something of a limited preview of coming attractions.

The Purpose? To bring the fight between the Arm and the Core somewhere it hasn't gone before. And where would that be? The Upper Stratosphere

I'm not going to be using this as the backdrop for my final map, it was taken at a low-resolution and then enlarged, and I'm not entirely content with the terrain below.

What will the actually immediate field of battle be? still working on it.

Remember when looking at it ingame, the two small platforms (off-screen in the above images) are inconsequential

low resolution? Looks pretty good to me. The concept is most intriguing.

okay, "low resolution" means 800x800 to a side blown up to 1024x1024 to a side...
and if anyone hasn't guessed it yet, I didn't use voodoo to get those fighters that high in the air, I used a skybox.

Did the

for example, must to be changed to something higher than the "normal", or the Spring engine accept it?
My question is because the subs Ive tested to plunge in deep needed modifications in "waterline" to 205 .

This kind of map would also look good for Final frontier kind of battles. :-)

That's a very good point, I always love shots of starships in atmosphere (much like in the Halo 3 trailer). It could make for some interesting games (provided you could get damaged ships to plunge to their doom :-) )

If you could do alpha on textures you could make giant features of multiple layers of sky blue, with stars as the top fo the skybox allowing you to go out fo the atmosphere if you zoom out enough, but not be able to see the stars at a lower level...

this isn't going to be a space-map, I'm going to make it so much of the map is accessible by ground-movers.

Has anyone here ever played Ogre Battle (don't answer, I already know you have not. Nobody ever does :?, it's always that Tactics Ogre nonsense, if even that.)
Well, there are 'secret' levels that take place on floating continents (more like islands), and I'm a bit inspired by that.

The map will definitely be a 'ground' war, but I want to make the combatants rely much more on aircraft than is typical.

thing is hight flight heights look great and MAKE AIRCRAFT FEASIBLE!

however, there are weird bugs like sometimes aircraft get stuck flying around in circles.

I'm all for this as long as ground based AA can't touch the high flying aircraft

umm yeah the aa can nail aircraft when they come in to attack... when aircraft swoop down the aa will shred them... but at least their approach is covered.

I understand the range of any weapon is represtend by a sphere aournd its center ?

Also, will the camera be able to zoom that far out, so you can conviniently control aircraft and ground units at the same time?

This picture reminds me of the idea of a high-altitude flying strategic bomber. Which can only be reached by long range missile defense.

works in my mod. I put the height up to 1000 and it still worked.. but heights over 300 cause the aircraft to do odd things(you can see it in the current beta).

Played it -and think its a great Idea

That is it... you need to make Castles on a Cloud, i cann see hovers in the Sky - Spaceships or Mountaintops as Buildareas... when can i expect the next map of this kind?

After finals I'll begin working on the actual map(s?). I've roughly drawn out the layout of one map, and I've got a theme in mind that should be pretty... original, if not interesting. I'm also going to be trying things I haven't done before, so it quite possibly will take me a while.

The Problem with the Void Water Thing are the rough Edges... if there was at least a Fade with it, that things become Transparent...

A Request - Can you make a NightMap in Stratosphere (or at SunRise) - i d love to see Citylights below. in the Dark...

How about - some floating Birds or Plants ? You for shure remember the BioGasBags in the OTA ?

And what are you still doing reading this post... back to work, there are people waiting for it...
