I've just finished my simple, but quite complete mapping guide.
Check it:
http://taspring.clan-sy.com/wiki/IceXui ... esign_Help
I think this might help mappers, with simple and complex problems with mapping. It ain't a tutorial, but i gives examples.
Hopefully someone wil use this, so my last 4 hours of typing wasn't in vain.
ice out.

I knocked the "+1" of the feature map, because it shouldn't be... I think it work best as just 1/8 (because each pixel is teh center of a square on the map, which is 4 points on the height map, hope that makes sence....)
However you can make it at +1 but sometimes it will mess up your placements when it down scales your image to the right size.
Also... Typemap I left at 1/16 but It should be 1/8 as far as I know... Can someone that knows what actull res the file should be clear this up (its always been put down as 1/8 but I know some people have had trouble, maybe your right!)
Looks nice, keep it up man.

IIRC you can have spaces in the directory names too, just envelope it all in quotes. (")
ie "C:/program files/TA Spring/s p a c e/fat ass texmap.jpg"

Well the wiki really needs some clean up, and some good to the point explanations. I do want to add some links, so you can directly download the programs/utilities, without having to look for them.
Thanks for the comments so far.

Just compiled my first map with your tutorial:
http://img303.imageshack.us/img303/3457 ... 3827ca.jpg
Although the wiki might be usefull for more complex informations, this tutorial was very easy to follow, even for me.
I noticed a small mistake:
[MAP]
{
name=SoftTerrain; // name that will be shown in-game on mouse-hover
...
} <- closing bracket is missing.
Now I'll try to figure out why there is metal all over the map and then come up with a layout so simple that I can realize it

Thanks for writing this guide!

thanks for the 'bug' finding! for a complete SMD checkup, you can always un-'zip' a map you've downloaded, and check the SMD file in it.
Thanks for the replies so far, this already means i didn't write it for nothing.
