Clans are just a logical way of playing with people you know and honing your skills privately so you can dazzle the pub world in competition rather then everyone knowing everything about your skill from playing you before anyways. In a game where teamplay is more important clans are more important but they are still nice in individual achievement games like TAS.

Some Clans are also have a great group feel, and good way to make friends and always have someone to play with.
