Laser Tone Generator

This was an out side project some of my friends did. Its basically 2 computer speakers with mirrors mounted over the speaker cones, one vertical and one horizontal. Then a laser (laser pointer) is reflected off the mirrors, and you can see the sound tones on the wall. Its pretty sick. Here is a google video, it gets better as you go along:

wow, those were very interesting. I think that the part where they were talking about string theory is total bunk, but I liked the tone visualisations (the harmonic at the end particularly).

String Theroy = Scientology for Scientists but Free... I watched a movie one time that was 2 hours of these guys discussing what was the precursor to string theory... I had found it in the college library... and I think it had the words "a walk" in the title... anyways... it's a very beutiful idea that's core principles are completely unfounded... but then again so was the theory of relativity until someone figured it out.

what I mean is that what they were seeing had no relation to String Theory, other than that the visual manifestations on the wall of what they were doing looked 'string'-like. I may very well be wrong, but what they were doing was actually related to interference patterns, right? I might not have understood Sheekel's explanation...

that guy talking was my friend...hes really smart but sometimes overdoes it
Our next goal is to do this using a propane gas flame. A flame wave generator. That would be awesome

Heh... I majorly

when that kid started on about string theory. This thing doesn't even have anything to do with interference... Or anything particularly 'scientific'. The non-scattering nature of coherent (LASER) light being the possible exception.
What is happening is that a beam of light is being reflected off first one and then another independently driven mirrors. They're getting neat patterns traced based on how they drive the two speakers. It's the basic principle that laser light shows use. In fact I think mirrors stuck on speakers is how laser light shows started (the real world Disco style equivalent of visualization plug in

).
I'm curious how they mounted the mirrors so as to isolate X & Y axis...
<goes rooting through boxes of junk for a laser pointer>

I have a cat so I have at least 2 lazerpointers, I have a wife so I'm sure I have at least a couple mirrors.. does just "tapeing them to the from of my computer speakers work or do I need something more specific.

That one kid is the most annoying kid with the most annoying voice i have ever met...
ffs, why doesnt he shut up...
in fact all three of those dumbasses annoy the hell out of me...
why dont they just shut up... "You're a genius! blah blah! Suck my dick genius!" etc etc
Christ, they're not as smart as they would like to think >_<

The "girl" was his mom...the little annoying kid was his brother.
Yeah, they must have felt they were doing something new...
Im a genius, i know what a sine function is!
Still, its a cool video. I hope im there when they make the flame wave generator

I belive in string theory now guys!
It's totally unrelated to the lazer thing I'm pretty sure but I think after seeing that that I must belive in it anyways!
Please slap your friend for me sheekel

I think what he meants was the point of string theory is that the whole universe is ordered and organised in perfect harmony with itself... natural order... String Theory is Like Atheists version of intelligent design... "wow the universe looks is so perfect and self balancing that it looks like it must have been designed by a controlling intelligence... you know what? I bet it's because the nature of energy and matter dictate a harmonic relationship between everything in the universe... let's make up 17 more dimentions so people will be impressed by our theory."

Heh... String theory is mostly an attempt to explain the massive differences between the smooth line predictability of the einstinian relitivity physics models and the total chaos of quantum physics. Einstien spent the last 20 years of his life trying to pop that problem, but he died before he came up with something workable. I don't know why string theorists think they need 20 dimentions, but they have decided they do for some reason...

They need ~20 dimensions (I actually thought it was 13, but it's been a while since I heard it) because that is what it takes to make the math add up. Making the math add up is critical to hashing out the laws of the universe.

When I said 17 I was being sarcastic/exagerating/ironic (depending on who you had for 10th grade english, I still don't believe irony and sarcasm are the same thing)... yeah... I understand the "make the math work" thing... basically for the chaos to make sense, there has got to be a lot more going on in the universe then we can measure right now... (examples are chaos "fractals" looking like "stuff" and the spinning representation of harmonic frequencies in the video)... it's still a matter of "why does a universe that shouldn't work seem so perfect from the 'outside'"... why do electrons "kind'of" exist in a "pattern" at a specific "disatance range" away from the netron/proton core? WTF is gravity FFS!!!
