When this happens, http://taspring.clan-sy.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=4429, we need more mods.

Usually we have at least one mod on at all times, but I've got exams coming up and I haven't been able to look at spring stuff at all for the past week or so.

From the timestamping that happened right about the time slot either me or deci usually fills. Who do you think would be a good candidate for another mod to cover that 7:00PM-1:00AM PST time slot if we do decide to add more mods? Are there any other timeslots that seem to be problematic?

Also, like I said before, mods are willing to take complaints and reports via email or PM after the fact. Include the date it happened, enough log to get a good sense of exactly the context (more is better then less) and the issue you had with the action in question and we'll deal with it as soon as we have the chance.

A log of mods on like those on the stats page would be nice, plus maybe a pm to all mods when there are none in the lobby?

Let's assume that a moderator:
- logs in once every 2 days.
- plays the game 4 hours each time it logs.
- of the time logged in, spends 10% of it's time monitoring the chats and the rest of the time playing or away.

That means that, to have an average of always one moderator logged in monitoring what is going on in the chats, we would need 2x6x10 moderators, 120 moderators.
Considering that in peak times the lobby has 100~200 people logged in...

There are tons of times late night (1-4am central time, usa) when I'm in the lobby and there are zero mods on. Unfortunately this is the time when the weirdos come out and start spamming

I think people start taking advantage of the system mostly when a mod simply isn't logged on. Less trouble seems to happen when I'm simply idle.

Also, why I idle you can highlight me by typing "swiftspear" or "moderator" so I might be off doing other things but I can still respond to requests in real time. I haven't been idling recently because I have exams coming up and I'm right in the middle of doing like 300 final projects my teachers all stuck in at the last moment just to be the awesome nice people they are. When I get more free time I'll be around alot more. Probably more then 4 active hours every second day.

If I'm home, I'm generally online. If trouble occurs, pm me and I'll deal with it. If i'm idle or ingame and someone pms me, I'll read through my chat logs and deal with the offender retroactively.

It's alot more work to votekick someone then it is to rejoin the server after being kicked...

Just add the ignore function. Then there isn't even really any need of mods. Cause if someone doesn't the way someone is talking, they can just type /ignore noob. The end. And never hear there spam again. Is there a good reason for you not to add the /ignore function? O_o

Posted: 10 Apr 2006, 18:35
by Drone_Fragger
Because having you ignore someone still means the server has to put up with the load, making it crash.

Have it automatically prevent someone from sending anymore messages for an hour once they have sent a certain amount of data withen a certain time-frame. Most effective way to prevent DoS. And it's the least painfull against people who accidently send to much.

But none the less, how could adding a /ignore function cause any harm? People being able to ignore spammers surely will not cause spammers to spam more spam? :?

Most spammers try to Crahs the server you know.

So you are saying that letting people use /ignore will make the server crash more often?

Hmmm....

That makes a LOT of sence! Thank you for your usefull insights! :-)
