my graphics card is one of those pathetic on the motherboard things. SIS 650 I think...
I can play counterstrike however on opengl mode, if that is at all relevant.
Btw, if I wanted to upgrade, would i have to find a graphics card specifically for agp 1 - as that's what my agp slot is, or can I use any agp graphics card

Springs hardware requirements are higher then counterstrike by a fair clip. CS is build on an engine that's 8 years old now, spring is maby 3, and has many components that use graphical functions much more recently released.
Any AGP card can be used on an AGP x1 slot, but the majority of cards will massively underclock themselfs to make usage under those conditions possible. It's probably not worth getting anything more then the bottom of the line card for an AGP x1 slot, however even a gforce FX5200 or radeon 9200 will run spring albiet not very well.

I'm now also having the issue; I wasn't before the latest update. I doubt it's because my GPU isn't up to par either.
BFG Tech GeForce 6800 OC GT 256 Pro
Asus A8V Delux mobo
Athlon 3400 64
1gb mem
To reiterate, this started with the most recent version. Worked fine up till now.
Any thoughts?

Update: Problem Found (Sorta...)
bavardage, what have you installed recently that you can think of not having since the last time it DID work?
I reinstalled to a new directory, as opposed to installing on top of the existing install, and it is working now. I have a few suspects that may have caused this. A few global AI's, for starters... I'm going to try a process of elimination to track down which file is causing the problem, meanwhile, you should try the same. Simply rename TASpring directory to TASpring(old) and run the full install exe. Then run via the shortcut as normal (you'll only have two maps, and only XTA, etc etc.. but just try it).
If it works, then we can start working on exactly what's causing the problem.
Keep me updated to your progress.

Update: Again - Solved.
Alright, it's a group AI doing it.
For me, it was two of them, either one of them will crash it.
cursally.dll
resourcebuild.dll
I'd just downloaded these to test them, and I'm assuming they were most likely writen for an earlier version of Spring and are no longer compatable.
I would suggest going through, one by one, all of your group AI's and moving them to a different directory till you find the one(s) responsible.
Hope this helps.

oh and just for reference:
I have never got it working.

right...
I have none of the above global ais, have done a complete reinstall, and still no joy.
I think I'll have to face the fact that my gfx card simply isn't up to it.
So what gfx card does anyone reccomend bearing in mind I only have an agp 1 slot (and a somewhat limited budget)

I've had a similar problem, the game froze after reaching "Creating sky" with 100% CPU load
I solved it by increasing the cooling of my PC. Try checking if your CPU or your graphics card is overheating. I can't make sure if the problem is caused by only one of them, because I have watercooling which cools both
