See for yourself how MS does their RTS :)

The License under wich this is released is "Shared-Source Limited Permission License" wich allows alteration and distribution of the code but not the use of sound / grafics

Edit:
Microsoft XNA required to build:

Don't call MC2 an RTS...
I love it and all, but it is closer to WCIII style of "RTS."

Ok, my apologies ;)

But still it might be an interesting read

Wow! I was thinking: thats unbelievable, Microsoft giving away rodocts as open source !
Than I saw that it was more or less as a "trial game" for people interested in XNA (which I´m sure will cost lots...) :/ . On the other hand they are still giving it away at the moment (the community technology preview).
So yeah, definatly interesting.

Mechcommander one was by far the better game. It was HARD, but the entire "your commanding mech pilots" thing was cool. I also liked the poorly acted movies.
