Map Battle damage: Surface Glassing

I wonder, with BARs normal maps, would it be possible to transform the look of embattled areas of a map?
Not craters (i more after appearance, then gameplay destroying deformations), but more glassed over, glowing, half-molten landscapes (allows also decently to explain the vannishing of craters/tracks).

It would provide a nice visual feedback about battle intensity, raise contrast of ground units and allow for a visual explenation for the uniformity of texture after extensive battlescaring
