First of all i'm using Autodesk's 3D Studio Max 8
Although I messed around with it a few times, I think I should start with a solid foundation.
Anyone know where a good place to have a clean and fresh start?

I am aware of Wings3D however, I hear that different modelling programs have completely different methods to do things.
Could you elaborate on why I might want to use wings3d?
Edit : I grabbed it and it looks alot more simple than 3DS, i'll try with Wings first than.

That isn't very nice of you Das Bruce
You can start with 3dsm just as good.
True that wings is easyer to learn, but still. I've started with 3dsm as well.
The tutorials comming along with the 3dsm are great.
The solid foundation is right there.
Help>Tutorials, and off you go. Start with the top. The Still Life tutorial.
Afther that one, the texture a low-poli spaceship from the gamedesign tut is very usefull, it handles UV mapping.
http://www.3dcafe.com/ (and then free stuff) is a nice plce for specivic things. (like lazers, smoke etc).
Ofcourse your local libary probably have some books of 3dsm (Maybe wings as well), All of them are doing the same job as the official tutorial.
Take a look at disciplus work:
http://spring.clan-sy.com/phpbb/viewtop ... c&start=40 You insta want to do the same ^.^
Off you go now, make us proud ^.^

Oh really. If you wanted that wisdom, why didn't you promote blender?

Simply put, if you are using 3dsmax, it is like a cannonball for a fly. Wings is good for basic modeling and uvwmapping. In spring we do not have the luxury of skeletal animations or normal mapping when it comes to models. Something like 3dsmax, intended for more indepth design and rendering may be a bit much for a beginer.
From personal experience I have found modeling in wings easier. Plus, you cannot go wrong with the price tag of "free and not pirated."

odds are because blender is confusing to most begining users and it's interface is not known for its ease of use.
Also, contrary to popular belief wings can handle complex geomitry just fine:

Well, I'll just stick with Wings3D for a bit.
Following this tutorial with some degree.

I'll post the final product soon.
Also, maybe if you guys can hook up with me on some sort of IM program since questions can be answerd faster that way.
Thanks for the quick responses btw.

It took me weeks, literally, to do a uv map in blender, and there are things I never did figure out. It took me about 20 minutes in Wings3D.
