Wiki: General resources

In regards to the General resources page on the wiki, major changes are in order:
  • Resources should have more details and descriptions. License, download link and project (or forum) link should be the minimum.
  • Old links need updating/removal.
  • I don't think maps, games, code and lua sections belong here.
  • Various sections need to be expanded.
Deleting things is easy, but first I'll start by adding the newest resource contribution.
I want to add the metal spots, but the links/licenses are unclear. Scened resources also has issues with licensing information so it isn't added for now.

IMHO, this type of resource works best as a stickied forum post.

It's next to impossible to reliably document externalities.
At best you use human resources to maintain the content of the page, at worse you have a stale page full of broken links.
With a forum post you expect that earlier posts may be out of date.

people can always post on the forum/reddit/gamedev pages requesting free resources and communities provide with the latest things(like the pixar textures, and the gigs of sounds recently released)

I have to disagree, forums will almost always become stale sooner than wiki does.
There's also the large benefit that anyone can edit the wiki, unlike sticky forum posts.

I understand it's not possible to provide perfect documentation on this, but we can do a good job using the wiki, it just shouldn't be a page of worthless links like it is now, but as long as we strive to provide a good minimum, things could be OK.

The community can give answers, but it's unlikely that one will get the complete picture, and certainly not in a speedy fashion that wiki would.

haha, and yet you almost completely agreed with me on my comment, except that you are willing to bet that people will update the page.

Yes indeed, which is why it is suited because external information also becomes stale, they are similar in this fashion.

Human resources

which it will become again and the circle continues.

speedy maybe, if the page is maintained, but hardly up to date.

I 'm not intending to change your mind on this, it was just curious how you basically agree with me but came to a different conclusion. :D

Simple really. I agree with your comments: that it has difficulties maintaining it, that it might be incorrect/stale due to external changes, and that forums might imply that things are stale depending on its post date (although sticky posts are not assumed as stale!).
However, I'm disagreeing that that makes forums a better choice. Wikis are less likely to become stale and are maintainable/editable by everyone which is important in this case.
