Wiki & resource subforums

Split from viewtopic.php?f=1&t=33366

The resource-subforums ( viewforum.php?f=67 and viewforum.php?f=56 ) are bad and should be closed, marked deprecated and be buried in some archive. I looked and found nothing useful in them.
That is related to wiki because having them in so high-visible spot works directly against the wiki.

You may be right, and a few examples would not be out of place, but spending 90 minutes spamming equivalents of "this is broken" onto 30+ long dead threads recieves a warning, Felony 3. (Silentwings)

E.g. viewtopic.php?f=67&t=24373&p=568834#p568834, viewtopic.php?f=67&t=3114&p=568837#p568837, viewtopic.php?f=67&t=24417&p=568829#p568829, viewtopic.php?f=67&t=17662&p=568818#p568818, viewtopic.php?f=67&t=21883&p=568826#p568826, viewtopic.php?f=67&t=13034&p=568833#p568833, viewtopic.php?f=67&t=17662&p=568818#p568818.

User was banned, mandatory minimum ban from warnings in short time period.

edit: for comment about wiki AI pages, see viewtopic.php?f=1&t=33366&p=568899#p568899

Imo it would be good to do something about the old resource subforums, they are barely used but they contain plenty of stuff that I wouldn't want to see lost, and there is always the argument that people might get old projects going again from old threads. So, I guess options are that we just lock them, or that we put a sticky/announce of "it's usually better to use the wiki" on them.

Just spamming "this is broken" would not haven taken 90 minutes. :regret:
I went through whole subforum and checked each thread for:
-working links / images
-duplicate
-if it is already on wiki
-relevance / correctness
All threads failed.

I thought "link is dead" or "already on wiki at XY" should be understandable, but appearently needs more detail. So to those threads that Silentwings used as example:

viewtopic.php?f=67&t=24373
A link to http://answers.springlobby.info/questions/
It is already on the links list of wiki: https://springrts.com/wiki/Links#Development_Links
The site is down since at least 2013: viewtopic.php?f=71&t=29652
Thread is 0% useful because there is list of links on wiki and the link is dead anyway.

viewtopic.php?f=67&t=3114
Thread has many broken links to fileuniverse.com
Since years this list is continued on wiki:
http://springrts.com/wiki/Map,_Mod,_And ... t_Programs
Thread is 0% useful because it is worse/older version of a wiki page.

viewtopic.php?f=67&t=24417
A guide that is since long time already on the wiki:
https://springrts.com/wiki/The_Complete ... pring_Game
Thread is 0% useful because it is just one link.

viewtopic.php?f=67&t=17662&p=568818
Gadget example of turned based play.
Thread is 0% useful because the link to gadget is broken.

viewtopic.php?f=67&t=21883
5 years ago a notification from about "engine will stop spawning start units" was worth a sticky thread but now the thread is nothing but one random small changelog fragment from 2010, mixed with off topic.
On wiki https://springrts.com/wiki/EngineChange ... pring_0.82 it is already mentioned for historical reasons.
A example gadget is in base content and in every mod.
Thread is 5% useful because at least the links still work, but it is already linked on wiki and rest of thread is not worth reading in 2015.
(unless one is interessted in talk about CA's archive size or discussion about "should this even be Lua?" or solutions like "you can have an indestructible and not noticeable null unit to hold the game.", nowadays that is bizarre/outdated.)

Single examples had been given often enough over the years, but it failed to make people recognize how bad the subforum really is.
I suggest to look through the subforum instead of using rose-tinted memory.
 How anyone can see value in tutorials with broken images or threads that are nothing but a non-functional link is beyond me.

Those are not "long dead threads" because the so-called "resources"-forum is very visible at top of viewforum.php?f=14
If that is how dead & forgotten threads are to be kept then what does that mean for the "Game Releases" subforum which is displayed in the same way?

"Thread is 0% useful because it is worse/older version of a wiki page."
yet the thread at least has summaries of what the tools are good for.

What to do with old stuff?
Archive the whole things in a archive board by year..

I went through whole subforum and checked each thread for:
The problem was you necrod a large number of threads which made it hard to actually address any issues, and by doing so you made any other discussion in the forum a lot harder to follow (most people check the "New" or "Unread" posts, which were now filled with a ton of your posts with mostly the same substance: "this is outdated and should be locked").
Anyhow, I definitely wouldn't delete any threads (seeing as this is a forum, not a wiki - and I think forum history should be preserved much like project history via a VCS), but some things might need archiving.
It would be a lot better if you made a single thread (or continued in this one) which accesses the issue of each thread and proposes a way to deal with them. Some will probably be left alone (at least 3 threads have authors that are active and ready to solve the problems in it), but for others we might be able to do something.

Is it possible to attach files to the wiki? I had a quick look and didn't find a way.

File upload has always worked ok for me, though I have only ever uploaded images.

I can upload images from https://springrts.com/wiki/Special:Upload, but I can't upload files in general (.lua, for example, is rejected). It also looks like all files are thrown together in the same folder, so maybe there are name collisions.

It looks to me like the forum is much more convenient for little snippets of "here's something useful", and the wiki is more convenient for multi-page/indexed stuff. So I guess we keep both.
