Spring RTS Engine

Hi all. Same old issue, can't resolve it: no maps or mods show in SpringLobby no matter what I try.

Resetting the attributes to not "Read Only" fixed it when I had Vista, but the same problem has hit me again with Win 7 Pro 64. I just did a fresh install of the OS, drivers etc, then I installed Spring 98.0 Portable option (ran as Administrator), copied maps to Maps folder and mods to Games folder. 'Re-load Maps/Mods' does nothing. I did the attrib -r -h fix and deleted springlobby.conf (which fixed the same issue in Vista) but it does nothing. I took ownership of the drive/folder/object for Administrators, nothing. Set SpringLobby to run as Administrator, nothing. If I try to change Spring settings, it says "Could not change settings, unitsync.dll not loaded" or similar.

I notice the springlobby.conf file is blank, and if I try to set any settings they don't stick. Spring executable path and untisync.dll path stay blank, Find does nothing, if I browse to them manually and click apply, the setting will not stick once I leave that tab, they just stay blank. Using Lobby ver 0.201, but I have had the same issue with many older versions in the past.

This seems to be a common problem, I have had it and solved it on other PCs, and a friend is having the exact same issue. On his system the maps and mods are there in the appropriate folders, but the lobby won't see them. Game worked fine, then he updated to latest version, now no maps or mods showing.

Anyone got any other ideas?

Ok, I fixed it.

The solution is to go into Spring Lobby, Edit, Preferences and on the Spring tab (top left of Preferences) click on Add New... at the bottom, then select the unitsync.dll file in your Spring install directory and click on the 'Open' button. You should then see '98.0' listed in the white box on the left, and your Spring executable and Unitsync library should be visible in the boxes on the right, if not then Browse to each of those files in the Spring install directory and select them and click on 'Open'.

Now the settings stick, maps and mods appear, woohoo, good times.

Not sure why this happens so often, but at least it is fixable, with a little digging. Only took 2 hours to figure this out.

whats the output of help->system info now?

not sure why springlobby didn't find spring automaticly, but this info could help to fix it for the next time.

This seems to happen a lot. I have a couple less PC savvy friends who won't play Spring anymore because every time they auto-update it through the lobby it loses the maps/mods or does not update properly for whatever reason and won't run, or the update does not show (still reports earlier version installed). Geeks can work around it, but the average semi-clueless user can't. Installation and auto-update need to work smoothly, and be easy to use, or you just turn off a lot of potential users who can't wrestle with bugs, and don't want to, they just want to play, and they'll just move on to a game that is easier for them to work with.

why is DownloadDir/C:\Users\z\Documents\My Games\Spring\ not writeable? this breaks a lot of stuff!

the paths used really look weird, very likely because of that.

also found an error related to your problem, autodetection for system installed spring didn't search programfiles, will be fixed in next version:
