Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

The new LTS Ubuntu seems to be very good. They finally fixed unity by switching to gtk3 and css based window decorations in compiz. Now it is very snappy, and very low on resources. And i suspect that a sideeffect of this rewrite is that now Spring finally maximizes correctly!

It took them 3 years (11.04 -> 14.04) to make unity really good, and now it is EOL since next version will already switch to unity-next. Old an new share almost no code in common under the hood so to me the first gen unity (versions 0-7) seem a bit like a wasted effort.

On the other hand this is going to be one of the most used if not the most used Linux OS for the next five years, so perhaps it is a dignified death to the codebase.

Im suspicious of 14, I installed 13 and it was a nightmare, with so many things broken that just shouldn't have been broken, like not having a working volume control, and things just randomly freezing and stopping working. It was embarassing and incredibly painful.

I recently installed 12 LTS and things are better, though it's frustrating having so many out of date packages from the current ppa's that come with it
