These maps are all over the social media now: here's a map that shows the true sizes of continent:

Here's one map with South up, because North is arbitrary.

Discuss...

Different projections look differently, yes. What point do you want to discuss?

People are pushing the goddamn "Arno Peters as social justice superhero" meme again? God.

How about Northern hemisphere bias? 90% of land mass is on the NH. That's why maps are that way. But also when discussing global warming, we often rely to measurements on the NH, and ignoring the other half.

Is this fair?

if you want accurate projections and all that shit, just buy a globe

if you understand mapmaking isn't a perfect science and never will be and you still need information delivered to you on a two dimensional plane, use a map

if you're some kind of weirdo who's anti-north then just flip either of the above two over

This is so old. In fact, there's even a game made on one such map now.

The map doesn't create the bias. It is due to a bias. Is that bias unfair? Is it stupid? You want to discuss climate models and how they lack southern hemisphere data (I doubt it, but that is the only topic you hinted at)?

Hasn't http://xkcd.com/977/ covered it entirely already?

It's missing the azimuthal projection.

excuse me but the importance of all of these pales in comparison to stereographic projection

south pole, this just shows how projections can be manipulated to proove a point. :|
