Setting up a LAN game

I'm sure there is a definitive post or FAQ already somewhere but I have honestly searched and only found fragments of info here and there. So I'm wondering if there is a set of instructions for setting up a LAN game. I downloaded the Lobby Server and read the readme. It said to launch the lobby server and then, I guess, both computers on the LAN need to launch the Battleroom. I did that and can see both computers (registered with different names on accounts). The readme suggested hosting the game on a computer that is not running the LANServer. I tried it both ways. But in both cases, the computer not hosting the battle times out when trying to connect to the host server. Both computers are connected to a router which is connected to DSL. I've not tried looking into messing with ports on the Router yet, but I wouldn't think that would matter on a LAN.
So, what is the secret? Do I need to use the battleroom? It looks like you could possibly connect to a game without it if you know the IP address. I tried that but I'm not sure that I know exactly how to discern the proper IP address. Any suggestions?
