mods vs games: folders and names (split)

split from Spring version naming explained thread.
Bit related, the mods\ folder where you put the .sdz files is now called games\
Since some time spring installer only created games\ folder but mods\ still worked too. Now it will not work anymore, so if you kept your installed spring games since some years you must rename mods\ to games\
Can already do it now, no need to wait.

games = mods?

Yes, those are synonyms.

Except from on the settings page, where you have game settings and mod settings. So on that page we use game for game and mod for mod.

There are no such things as mods. What are you on about 'mod settings'?

the folder in spring dir "mods" beside "maps" is since years there - so they are mods

the folder shouldn't be used since ages. i just forgot to remove it, thanks for reminding! (FYI: https://github.com/spring/spring/commit ... 5b82979612 )

from engine side, there is no difference between mods and games, so there are only games. also imo its much easier to explain that a game archive has to be placed into the games folder. so this is mostly for consistency.

not anymore (except for backwards compatibility) and then only by convention... and it was only ever like that because the TA-Spring installer actually included enough core TA/XTA files to be called a game.

edit: Thanks abma... I guess it's unqualifiedly "Not Anymore" now.

Not THIS again.

We call them games because people get easily confused with the term mod. Mod in spring means MODULE. Everywhere else game related it means MODIFICATION.

arguably any SDZ/SD7/SDD is a module. To reduce the confusion we have adopted the term games for game projects. Since maps modules get to be called MAPS after all. Modifications of spring games use mutators(or at least they should). Tons of stuff is left over using the mod label. *edit* and as abma says the folder was just left over*

Now there ARE content modules. My next project uses a core module for base gameplay code. Forb moved his maps to using a map features pack(module). so the mod folder still has a use but IMO it should be renamed to MODULE so the term in less ambiguous.

i have this folder since i play spring
so i have this whole spring directory since i play spring
so i always over installed new spring version
so i have always all "games" files in "mods"
so i call them mods

now some dev rename it
.. thats what u get if u make even small changes like a rename.. u confuse.

from now on i call them games. whatever its an piece of software and should not eat to much time in configuring and understanding the "around" of it. the "ingame" is more important for the fun and that is what we want from a game.

All games I download using TASclient are in Spring\mods...

Spring\games is empty.

TASClient still works? afaik its unmaintained. also the bug-tracker isn't used since ages, so i wonder why there are still TASClient users...

if its maintained, who maintains it?

i want to get rid of:
- svn on springrts.com (->move to github / sourceforge / google-code)
- tasclient bugtracker (-> seems to be unused)

this way the bugtracker maybe can be used again.

also, the change to use "games" should be tiny. the folder can be used since spring 0.82.7 (!!!)

We've been amused by this for years, even before ZK took off there was little reason to use TASClient but there were some very vocal folks who continued to assert it was superior.

I think it depends on what each person likes best in a lobby. TASclient offers me the best experience. SpringLobby crashed alot for me and I didnt like the look. ZKlobby is pure hell, it is everthing I don't want a lobby to be or do. Havent tried other lobbies so far.

Notalobby is pretty sane if you don't have to use optimus on linux and don't mind the gpl violation stuff.

Also, you can weblobby (preferably with chrome), which is like zomg AND supports optimus on linux.

In battle setup. There is one tab called game settings, and another tab called mod settings. Game settings are those settings that apply for the whole spring, whereas mod settings are specific to each mod. That's why I said they are not synonyms everywhere.

But maybe the second mod settings tab could be called something like ally-games, and the first could still be games. Why: because prefixing something like ally- has worked well before when we can't find proper words.
