You all know the "V" command right? It brings up a small stupid box who says something about "what kind of codec you want and other boring shit" and then records a video? And you know about the frekinG "OMFG THE LAG" it causes?

Well, today, it ends. Im sick and tired of the V command ruining a critcal moment when i try to find a idle com to build some MT and Flakkers when i suddenly realises that my enemy is building brawlers. Whoops, Lag, the brawlers onroot pwns your ass.

Why i suddenly Wanted to remove this idotic key? Well, 1: It's has been bugging me many version to remove it from the "Keysomething.txt" 2: It has ruined many games where i click it and 3:

Code: Select all

[21:17:21] <Kixxe> WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[21:17:30] <BigSteve> ?
[21:17:45] <Kixxe> Okay, the fucking all sucky "Video hotkey:V" needs to go!
[21:17:54] <Kixxe> I just played, mmh kay?
[21:17:59] * wazzza is eating brain
[21:18:01] <BigSteve> hehe
[21:18:20] <Kixxe> Tried to find idle com, presseding Ctrl+c does so, pressing ctrl+v on the other hand
[21:18:34] * wazzza likes brains
[21:18:35] <Kixxe> It brouthg up some sucky shit and made the game a mess
[21:18:43] * wazzza is very inteligent
[21:18:46] <BigSteve> just press v again
[21:18:47] <Kixxe> THEN i wanted to write "I hate the V command"
[21:18:54] <Kixxe> Under the UBER LAG
[21:19:05] <BigSteve> i think that works if you press v again
[21:19:10] <Kixxe> But it seams, thanks to lag, that CTRL was pushed in
[21:19:11] <BigSteve> it cancels it
[21:19:17] <BigSteve> ah
[21:19:18] <BigSteve> hmmm
[21:19:29] <Kixxe> So, Ctrl A and ctrl d made all my units blow up
[21:19:35] <BigSteve> lol
[21:19:44] <Kixxe> And then TAspring treaw an error and crashed
[21:19:47] <Kixxe> YAY
[21:19:59] <Kixxe> Okay, no error, but it crashed
[21:20:00] <Kixxe> Bam
[21:20:05] <Kixxe> I did'nt push ESC
[21:20:26] <Kixxe> So now, im proposing to take the V command to F11 or something
[21:20:31] <Kixxe> Volia, problem solevd
[21:26:16] <Dynamoe2> 1 more for Mars
[21:26:31] <Kixxe> meh, im gonna go post a treadh bout this shit

...Then just edit the SelectKeys file. Any text editor will do it. Boom, changed keybinding and end of gripe.

I know, it's esay, but i gotta change it with EVERY new version. And, it servers no pratical use being close to other keys you use alot. Why the hell keep it where it is?

I've lagged out of games because I accidentally hit it then put it behind spring and couldn't get it back.

to get to the record video dialog, if you missed it by accident, ALT+TAB (usually once).

to cancell it, press Esc.

yeps, its a bit trippy where it is atm.

i suggest

bind f10 CreateVideo

(and... what does SingleStep do???).

yes.. deffinetly please.. do not overwrite the files!..
or at least ... generate a backup.. or attempt to update...

well take this only as a suggetion, as i know there are lots other things to do.

in the meantime i suggest everybody to make a manual backup, (as i have now :) )

edit 2: ah.. and.. should we be using the feature request system?..
tx Sean Mirrsen, its even more precise than trying a slow speed then. (for screenshot purpouses in my case :) )

Jumps the game logic to the next tick. Effective only during pause.

Ive had this problem as well. Not very often, but it does get very annoying when it happenes. F10 is good, and is what I usually bind it to after the updates. Please, for the next update, change it to F10 or some other obscure key.

Get that damn key off to somewhere else by default, it screws new players.

If video recording acctually worked or there was some easy way to get rid of the stupid thing then it wouldn't be so much of a problem. However the current "press V to explode spring" system is kindof stupid.

There is an easy way. Create a self-extracting Zip file with your keybindings and point it to your Spring directory. Really quick, double-click, instant restore is just so slick...

It's really that easy. Although the installer should detect existing keybindings, and V is an inconvenient spot, it's not armageddon.

Yes, I agree. I just usually comment it out. But when pushing it by accident, it does work. Great for making a video about a new bug you found. You just need to have a video codec already installed on your system for it to work (XviD, divx, etc etc)

Wouldnt making the file readonly when your not changing ti do the same job?

I hit v by accident alot, The game lags because a freaker is stuck in a factory, i fidn ti adn go to rpess c, the agme si runnign at somethign like 2FPS and my chatbox is fileld with error emssages at aroudn 40 msgs per second.

Then hey presto I rpess v instead of c and I get a dialog. I cant see where my mous is so I cant use this dialog and I have never been able to record as a result. It then press esc and my AI Log is ruined at several hudnred MB of saved erro messages. To make thsi worse I then ahve to wait for NTAi to finish writting the backglog of engien error msgs its recieving.

Shouldn't be too hard to do and would solve a great annoyance thus beeing very benefitial for the amount of work involved. Me votes yes.
