Map Borders/skybox

I was wondering if there's a way to make the "outside" of the map more nicely?
like if the map could extend the playable arena.
example of what i mean(using tabula as a example):
Red outline marks the border
so that the map continues outside the playable arena instead of having that ugly cut.

there is a widget which redraws a map mirror-image outside of the map boundaries, but there is currently no way to limit the play area of a map (there's a GSOC proposal for that)

Yes, there are.
Please go read
this thread on the very subject of map edges, it is a bit long, but does deliver many interesting solutions.

I see 9 pages..
Is there any plans to allow something like this in a later spring engine?

I've told you already that there's a GSOC proposal for that:

There are Lua solution useable right now, so no need to wait for engine side implementation.
Though I suppose a clean engine way to specify a playable area would be welcomed.

Yeah would be nice if its added to the engine instead of having to workaround it with lua scripts etc. Make a outside that's part of the map(but not playable), and maybe a option to fade it to black/fog.
