Spring and CEG features/bugs?

The awesomeness that is that screenshot cannot be overstated. By removing the colormap variable, I am able to spawn a straight up sprite using ceg. The only sucky part is that it throws an error.
Is there a way to get what I want (which is the behavior in the screenshot) without mangling the ceg system?
