GPU for spring (linux mint)

My ATI HD4980 has video memory broken so I need to replace it.

Since I want to use linux (linux mint) and I heard NVIDA was so much better for the driver I was wondering if that was true.

Also Spring is kinda the only game I am using so I would like to have your feedback about NVIDA GPU you used with spring/linux

Since My system is a bit old now (i5 750 4Go RAM), I dont think I need something really good anyway.

I am mostly interested by the stability of the card and its behavior with compiz that sometimes was hanging 100% on ubuntu 12.04 x64

At last I like to program with CUDA so I would prefer most recent cards (and if possible double precision by using some manual tweaking but I guess I am dreaming here :D)

If you have any advises, I take them !

Thanks !

Edit: I was thinking to go for a Geforce 500 serie. Question is: do you think that is actually too much cause of my old i5 750 ?

Zotac has a GT 440 for 50 dollars USD that has better specs than my considerably more expensive GTS450 from EVGA.

I have one of them and I can attest that the card is top notch (I have one in my media center computer).

I would recommend putting a different heatsink/fan on it, but it works really really well regardless.

This will run pretty much everything on high settings at a nice framerate, including starcraft 2, gw2, Nuclear Dawn (and by extension, all source games), etc. For that price, you can't beat it.

Edit:
I find it irritating that idiots will always write stupid shit like "It's not a high end card...".

Ok, well then what do you call a video card that gives you 60 - 100 FPS in just about everything you run it in on max settings?

When getting a new vid card you have to ignore a lot of morons.

Edit2:
Imo the "EVGA GeForce GTX550 Ti FPB,1GB" card is overpriced.

The 560ti represented the best value for money in the last gen of geforce cards and can handle pretty much everything that can be thrown at it. The new 6xx cards are still expensive and unless you're powering 3 or 4 monitors you wont see the difference in performance ( maxed out )

(i5 750 4Go RAM),
That is an absolutely excellent CPU. If you think its aging a bit, just bump the BLCK to 150 or 166 mhz, and it will magically get better, for free, on stock voltage, stock cooler.

I have a 560ti, its awesome. Quiet and plays everything maxed (I also have the same i5 750 :)

560 ti is indeed an excellent card if you can find one that is priced well.

is stock 560ti really better than a 460GT OC? (most are ~15% overclocked)

series 6xx has nice new features - bindless textures, better double precision, 2nd DMA controller, ... - still it's ways too expensive for those.

edit:
Nvm since 460 isn't produced anymore their price just got much higher, nor are there any superclocked ones available.

+1 for 560 ti, the market is pretty saturated with them at the moment so you should be able to find a nice deal on one

Thanks you all for your input ! I think I will indeed go for a 560 ti. I got a P55-UD3R as MB so I guess I will try what you say beh.

I recently got a 560 Ti myself, running on arch linux + kde with nvidia proprietary drivers. It works beautifully and is plenty of overkill for spring or any games I run with wine (Currently mostly GW2).

You play gw2? Add me "Forboding Angel.7306".

Coresair is on as well, but I can't remember what his UID is.
