strife. Probably the best fps as far as stories go. Some awesome plot twists...

Even to this day, I still can't understand how lemmings would have been fun after 5 minutes, which is precisely why I never bought the game lol

It was a puzzle game for like 10-year-olds. You have N tools to apply to the levels and you apply them in a way that makes sure you get the most lemmings to the end. This meant you had to worry about running out of tools, about not saving enough lemmings... and because the lemmings don't stop walking, it had a lot of rushing and high tension.

Although if you played it today it would be boring as heck since the tools are introduced one-at-a-time in a long-assed set of introductory missions (heck, this was back when *mice* were a new thing in PC gaming, so they gave you time to get acquainted).

But yeah, it was a solid puzzle-game with an RTS twitch-micro element added on.

10 year olds? Did you try the hard levels? One of the last ones drove me up the wall. I remember eventually finding a walkthrough guide for that level (was it on the early web? I can't remember) and the sheer evil of it actually involved sacrificing a large portion of your poor lemmings at some point (each level had a percentage of lemmings you had to save so some could be lost). It was evil and complex.

I'm mostly basing that on how *incredibly* long the tutorial period of the game was.

Yeah, I know it got pretty hardcore way later on. I'm just sayin' it's good for kids because I actually set up Pingus (the FOSS remake) to my nieces and they love it and they're about that age, and iirc that's about how old I was when I played it. Never got through to the end, though.
