checked it out because terraria is "done" (boo hiss) but some company called gaslamp games tweeted that they would be interested in continuing to develop terraria... i had to have a look at their other work before i passed judgement.
it's great fun, i laugh pretty much every time i read any sort of text in the game... "congratulations, you have died" pretty much sums it up
it's a game clearly inspired by hack, but without the painful interface (it's more like standard RPG controls and menus.) turn based, you wander through a multi-level dungeon finding and collecting items and fighting monsters.
i tried a few times last night (the old lie of "i'll just check this out for half an hour before i go to bed") and was instantly sucked in. they take the stuff from hack that was just too funny (drinking potions to try and figure out what they are for example) and put even more of a hilarious spin on them. "wearing this tunic will make you the dandiest fop in all the land". priceless.
so yeah... if you like roguelikes or classic "hardcore" RPGs, you'll like this one, and soon be jamming stacks of baseballs into your horadic lutefisk cube (lutefisk for the lutefisk god!)
but yeah. gaslamp can do terraria, i'm fine with it now.

yeah dude it's effing lame, you can google and see that
a) didn't follow up on promises (NPC factions etc)
b) didn't provide modding API

fffff lol i paid for minecraft, didn't get premium, waited a month for my CC bill, the charge was there, i went back on "get satisfaction" and said "hey dudes i paid, i wanna play, you've got my dough" and instead they refunded my money...
so yeah, i won't pay a nickel for it, but it's probably due for another playthough... maybe i'll set up a VPN server (hamachi etc) this weekend if there are interested parties (hell, i'm interested, plug in some of the awesome mods like the planes and the sky kingdom and i'm there)
never did get to grief wombat, which was why i wanted to play in the first place. my biggest minecraft regret

I like Terraria as it is, and instead I would be wary of other devs taking it to push it in other directions.
Terraria was a couple euros in the first place. And then got lots of free updates during the year. I really don't see why you complain.
Meanwhile, you got 60E games, with 10E piece DLC that are about adding back two maps from the previous version.

Terraria's alright in my book. I got 50+ hours of fun out of my $15(?).
...Now if only you could pirate car insurance.

I didn't find it fun, I was hoping for a mod api to save the game.

I think it's important that the devs of Terraria can drop a game like that when they're sick of putting updates into something that feels old and stale. I'm seeing a bit of grime of that type in the development efforts of both minecraft and dwarf fortress, for example.
However, I think, after the size of the success the community made Terraria, they should be left with a functional modding AI. Pay it forward to the modders and they'll sustain the community.
That being said, Gaslamp games is sexy. I'm not a giant dreadmore fan, as I find dungeon crawling a bit uninspired, but I'm a HUGE gaslamp fan, as I find the technical specifications of dreadmore supreme :)
