A night time visitor...

So, it's 1:30 am and I'm slaving away at CT, lights are off and girlfriend is sleeping a few feet from me. I hear some fluttering and clacking sounds, so I turn around and see a bird-shaped shadow flying in circles around my room. I think "oh god..." and turn on the light.

Sure enough, its a bat. My girlfriend of course wakes up after a few moments and asks what is wrong. After I reveal there is a bat in the room, she starts shrieking and hiding under the covers. I step out of the room, with the door open, trying to lure it out to the rest of the house. It flies into the bathroom, where I close the door.

Formulating a plan, I suit up (into my pants and jacket) and discover that it is stuck in the bath tub. I guess bats aren't great at taking off from the floor... So long story short, I end up sliding a big plastic lid onto the floor of the tub, and put a Newegg box on top, and took it out to the porch where it flew away.

Not really sure how it got in... kind of disturbing, really. Guesses point to the chimney, will have to figure out how to close it off...

Managed to get a picture of it in the tub...

You know, I always thought the typical movie reaction to bats ("ZOMG RUN AWAY!") was stupid growing up, but actually encountering a bat I totally see the reasoning now. Any time it started flapping its wings, I would freak out and back up real fast. I was afraid it would lunge at my face and give me rabies, haha.

I'd like to say this was me. But then I'd be lying :(

Check your house thoroughly for bat poop. Bat guano is exceptionally dangerous to humans.

Also, bats are the leading cause of rabies in humans. If you were so much as scratched, go to a hospital immediately.

Too bad such cute, neat little animals have so many nightmarish diseases.

wuss, I picked up the last bat I saw, my balls are too big to fear bats. Don't believe me, ask panda. Looks like a little brown bat, little guys are cute as hell, shame about rabies and all, I used to have a colony of about 20 of the little guys in my old apartment ceiling. Sadly they had to be evicted but it was so batman being outside when they would leave.

Its true, I've never liked picking up animals. My little brother was always the one to do that.

No scratches, thank goodness. As for the poo, we didn't look super hard but nothing really stood out. I think it had just entered the house, I'm sure we would have noticed it if it'd been here longer.

A few years ago I had to pull a bat out of my cat's mouth. Flying thing got into my apartment during the night, and cat caught it quite fast. That made enough noise for me to wake up, so the bat was still alive and not too badly injured. I released it.

Well, at least I didn't have to run around catching it myself :)

Those hairy things are cute :)

My cat used to catch lots of them in summer - on the balcony (3rd floor under roof)!

My cat would totally freak out when it made it into the room and would be flying around the room in circles. Those were the only moments it would actually throw things down and break all my stuff - when it was hunting.

One night a bat made it somehow into the wooden door framing and was crawling and scraping inside. My cat nearly exploded :D
To prevent her getting a heart attack (and get myself back into bed) I had to brake open the entire door framing (100y old doors...) - just to have the stupid bat flying around in my room again :)
