How to get the technology points? (Linux)

I just got Zero-K (on Linux, using springlobby ) and I was curious about the technology unlock stuff.

1) Does it apply to skirmish matches or just online?
2) How do I get the points needed to unlock techs?
3) Why does this technology unlock system exist anyway?

Thanks.

It gets players playing more, and makes the game a little friendlier for n00bs. Log in at zero-k.info to burn your XP to buy stuff.

Dunno about the skirmish match question.

I've got 100xp atm.

Do I have to play online matches to get more XP?

Preety much. The more online matches you play, the more XP you get. Single games vs. Chickens on a spring server also count, although its preety small. Highest as I found are in PW games.

As for the unlock question, basically when you level up, you gain Points equal to the XP that was required to level.

I don't think it really makes the game friendlier for new players, but it does put them at a disadvantage compared to older players in terms of selection, while obviously simplifying the immediate learning curve.
