regarding donations

I just stumbeled upon this neat project and after reading thru some comments on donation by the developers i have some suggestions.
From what i've understood the developers don't need donations, but the project might. A bounty system might be a good idea, since the game needs high quality artwork why not collect donations and hand them out to people contributing good gfx (let the devs be the judge of whats good)
Some projects already use this and it seems to be working pretty well. (take
http://www.i2p.net as an example)

I don't like bounty systems because they put the focus as to what's needed in the hands of people who know little to nothing about the acctual project and code. Just an opinion.

not nessecarily, you can solve that by adding the donation to a single pool and then letting the devs choose what bounties to announce

The devs would keep it for themselves.
AI work would be subject to ridicule, arguably AI work is harder than creating textures or scripting the average unit, but we wouldnt get any of it.
Mods wouldnt be the same either, someone may spend hudnreds fo hours and get nothign because someone who spent 4 or 5 made a more popular mod that earnt them more.
What about the linux port people too?
And the relucatance of people to contribute knowing it's gonna end up lining the pockets of people they might not like rather than buying things needed for the project?
And artwork is a modding thing. The SY's would give a basic interface and the extensions needed to expand on it for specific mods. And we have enough free artists here.

Handling money is evil and ruins the inocence of things.
Still, remember the Make Something Unreal contest by atari for Unreal Tournament? It would be fun to make something (money included) for spring's outside stuff.
For example, a contest for the best AIs or for the best original GPL units set, as to free Spring from the legal issues tieing it up to the oTA content.

ahem, spring still isnt 100% stable, for example AI's sometimes crash due to engine bugs and not AI bugs, how do we know this? Because AI bugs give an exception while engine bugs bring up that fancy dialog.
I wish that both dialogs would kill the spring process after it exited =(
