Important to note that it's not just a no-fly zone. They have been instructed to protect the civilian populace. This means they may bomb military targets attacking Benghazi. Most analysts I've heard are concerned about the Libyan artillery emplacements, since that's something these no-fly zones usually ignore. If the air strikes will be blowing up howitzers along with planes and radar and SAM sites, that could help keep the rebels in control of Benghazi.

+1 I thought the west would miss the chance to put its money where its mouth is. Nato went into kosovo before any un resolution.

Yeah right, so in Bahrain or Jemen dictatorship troops shoot peaceful civilians by tens daily and invite foreign troops to "stabilize" situation (= to help suppress dissent) but this is being ignored.

Instead west decides to intervene Lybia where the dictator is not so west-friendly..

Army either stays with Gaddafi, max 2000 people defected to rebels, some units dissolved and stay neutral. Rebels have no proper coordination and training, they kept attacking entrenched army at Syrta and yesterday they shot one of their 2 aircrafts over Benghazi.

So what is the intervention going to do and why would "rebels" be more legitimate side than Gaddafi? What if most population supports him?

While I'm instinctively in support of the rebels since hey, how could they be worse than Gaddafi, I do agree that they're almost suspiciously faceless. The rebellion has been going on for how long, they control how many cities... and yet there has been almost precisely *zero* reportage on who they are beyond anti-Gaddafi. I haven't heard a name of a single even *local* leader, or an interview with a rebel, or anything.

And yes, the UN needs to get off their damned asses W.R.T. Yemen and Bahrain.

What exactly can be done in Bahrain that wouldnt provoke a shitstorm involving Saudi Arabia, it would be a political nightmare that would quickly escalate beyond Bahrain. I veyr much doubt the unanimous support in the Arab League for Libyan intervention would result of a vote for Bahrain.

Yemen as a country is unstable and has been for a long time, and has been fighting various uprisings and rebellions almost continuously. Besides if wikileaks is to be believed, the US has already intervened in yemen on a regular basis.
