So far the most graphical, violent and addictive roguelike I played.

Open source project forgotten by time, abandoned, devoured by spam bots and later resurrected by fans.

Iter Vehemens ad Necem (a Violent Road to Death)

Abandoned sourceforge website

I recommend you download the LIVAN variant, it contains vast improvements and more content. There is even one variant featuring 3D graphics.

The name sounds familiar, I think I briefly tried it 10 years ago or something.

But what makes it so good, compared to other roguelikes? Is it more like ADOM or Crawl or what

Material system - everything has a material, you can f.e. use scroll of wishing to make your bodypart out of gold, or make your giant chest into edible food.

Bodypart system - attributes are based on your bodyparts and how trained they are and f.e. you can make frankenstein-style monster by using wand of necromancy on a pile of bodyparts.

Magic is entirely handled by wands, except for some enemies that can cast natively. There are explosives and kamikaze dwarfs, terrain can be destroyed/mined.

It has copious amounts of blood and dismemberment in fights, which is nicely displayed. You can eat your enemies piece by piece or beat them to death with their own leg.

It has monster bosses 4 square big.

Been playing this...its very fun indeed.
I played until i was attacked by a massive horde of carnivorous plants.
I killed them but than more spawned, I moved away and more spawned etc...
Eventually i died :(

Happened to you?why did they keep appearing?is here a reason for it?

It's a special boss fight area. Guess what the boss is. :regret:

Usually they are not much of a problem, until you insist on killing every single one that spawns.

Started another game and a zombie of an orc officer with a burning blade killed me with one attack...
Im not sure why I decided to attack a zombie of a troll officer with a flaming blade after i just started playing but it was a grievous mistake..

Go into it expecting a learning curve from hell. There's literally about 30 commands bound to keyboard keys, you can do virtually anything, but figuring out what command is best to use in what situation and in what place takes quite a while to get used to. So far I've basically just been running around kicking everything and picking up everything. I haven't figured out too much more than that yet :P

You can pray to different gods once you find a book of them or an altar.
You can read scrolls...you use the zap command when you want to say... fire a lightning from a lightning wand..
I found all sorts of bizarre stuff that i have no idea what to do with...whistles, a bag with powder, bones, some sort of expensive nut??

With whips! Also if you get 2 I think they whip each other if I remember correctly, limbs flying and all.

EDITED
Ok i managed to find a mythril sword!!!
I tried hardening it with a scroll and it told me my mind was not ready or something...
How do i increase intelligence??in fact how do i increase any of my stats...I dont seem to be able to find anything about it in the wiki.
Also i sometimes get messages like "you suddenly feel very agile" wtf?
Other chars get those as well..
Or even for body parts like a hand or leg...

The agile message comes from one of your legs gaining agility. It's gained from walking and various other sources. Almost every action you do will increase your stats somehow. Your stats are bound to your bodyparts, so when you lose a leg -> pray to some armor god -> receive an iron leg, you wont have the same stats.

Also gods can reattach your lost limbs if they like you and you pray on their altar with said limbs in inventory.

Intelligence can be increased by zapping lots of wands/reading scrolls, talking to the book shopkeeper and by eating ommel cerumen. There are probably other methods I forgot.
