Kinda excited about this.
The idea seems really appealing to me and I have faith the guys who made minecraft will do a good job :]

Yeah, I was gonna make a thread myself. Note that the only reason I'm looking forward to it at all is because the guy who's developing it works for Mojang.

kind of hard for a company to set a precedent of quality when they only have one other half-completed game
i have a feeling this seals minecraft; i would be very surprised to see any big improvements or changes after this. (NPC villages, ruins, quest mode, zombie siege? i doubt it at this point, now that they've already started the next thing)

SUPPLEMENTAL DATUM!!!

You might have heard that "Mojang and Penny Arcade" are working together, I've even seen some sources put our name first, which is a truly gruesome error. What has happened is that Mojang would rather develop a videogame than write one, and I would rather write one than develop, and we two fell together in some cosmic romance. I'm a hired gun, though - nothing more. I'm on "fluff," essentially. I'm a fluffer.

I see what you mean, but my understanding is that just one dude from Mojang is working on it, and Notch is still mostly going to be preoccupied with Minecraft. It would be very sad if Minecraft slows down, or stops, with this. I have a rather strong bias against anything card-"based", "related" or "inspired by" with only a handful of exceptions... and those exceptions have no cards within sight.
Still, hope this game is successful for the sake of putting more good into the Mojang name.

Basically: it was Notch's friends dream project, and Notch made a bajillion dollars so he was able to fund his friend's project, and so now they are working on it with the funds Notch acquired.
I'm not sure, I think it will be good, I'm just not sure it will see anything near the success that minecraft did. It's reach into the card and boardgame genre's for inspiration is going to alienate alot of the casual market that Minecraft banked on.

notch is such a lazy fucker, player made mods demonstrate that it is easy to add new block types and mobs yet notch only wheezes out a new block once a month or so inbetween travelling, living in his solid gold house and having interviews where he tells people how good the game is. I wish anyone but him was developing the thing because it might be halfway finished by now

you sound like you NEED to play minecraft, why is that? you can quit any time you want. sure it would mean you wasted your 10$ but, hell, sometimes life just kicks ass.
also, let notch live in his solid gold house, he earned it!

Is mojang the minecraft guy?
Finish minecraft you idiot!

With over a million Ôé¼/$ they could actually make a real game.
(hire real programmers, people with a vision ect)
German developers like the guys who made settlers really struggle and this douchebag makes over a million with minecraft!
Minecraft where the lack of gameplay is a feature!
And I bought it!

You should assasinate him, then say it was because of a pc game then they will think youre crazy and only lock you up for 5 years or so.
Would be totally worth it.

I feel the same.
Imagine though if a big studio did a game like minecraft...
And I mean with the same small investment in gfx...
They could spend tons of money on just making awesome gameplay mechanisms...
Just imagine the rpg you could create in a mine craft setup..
You could even do a first person strategy game liek battlezone or something similar to DF....
Minecraft proves that you can invest almost nothing in gfx and still sell...

battleforge was the best ccg based game. no one can convince me otherwise.
I will watch the dev of scrolls but honestly it isn't likely to be on my top 10 list of games I am interested in.

i agree with most things here. notch is slow as hell, and continues to maintain (or even go slower) his "indie game" development speed even though he's flush with cash.
penny arcade is mega aids q.q nothing good can come of that
basic im not sure if id want a big studio making MC, i mean, i guess im willing to trade slow development for an abscence of pay-for-perks/monthly subscription/ingame ads
also the people who generally crap their pants in ecstasy for every EA and blizzard release probably aren't even the sort to go for something with "throwback" graphics, they're the guys who've been saying "well, CoD4 looks nicer" all along
however. perhaps this is a good thing, as notch promised to release the saucecode for minecraft when it was in a "finished" state.

But probably it wouldn't sell as much as a more conventional game.
Why do you think devs are simplifying their gameplay mechanics constantly either, it's not because their gfx is taking too much of their budget.
