MP3 Players

Looking to buy one;
- 16Gb+,
- do not want an Apple product,
- would prefer a standard USB cable not some proprietary rubbish,
- Don't want to have to use any crappy additional software
- Not bothered about video playback
- Not really bothered about formats other than MP3
- Has to be loud enough to cause irreparable damage
Any suggestions?

This is ironically hipster-ful.

Sounds like you want a walkman.
I seemed to be going in that direction myself (though the NWZ-A845, although that has a proprietary sony connector). This will after all be replacing an extremely venerable Sony MZ-R500.
TradeMark: I don't really want the hassle of buying a new phone and I'm more than happy to keep my phone and my portable music player as two distinct gadgets.

How much money do you want to spend?

get a zune, my housemate has one and shit is sleek
not wanting an apple product is pretty understandable, they cost more than all the competition, replacement wires and accessories are grossly overpriced and they hold you hostage with the staggeringly shitty software required to use it. also, the apple repair service can take a fucking age to send the thing back to you

Exactly.
Seems that the current walkman range has many complaints over low volume, even with AVLS turned off.
Looking to spend up to ~£150.

Long link makes long thread long.
This statement is no longer accurate or relevant.

Or maybe he just doesn't want to pay for an overpriced product?

I too have been keeping an ear open for a replacement soon. The ipod I'm using is nearing the end of its life, and I simply don't want to dish out the money for a new one. I looked at the Zune and mostly liked what I saw. My biggest concern is that I like iTunes, and I don't want to return to Windows Media Player.
I'll be keeping an eye on this thread

Cowon repair service is very good.
I have these two right now one is a sansa fuze+ rockbox firmware
and the other is a cowon iaudio7.
(Both very good and both not made anymore)

On the rockbox firmware you can play game boy color games
and doom.

Not really. If you don't buy them direct, they're pretty much on par.
replacement wires and accessories are grossly overpriced
Here.

Alright. I agree 1,000,000,000%.
iTUNES SUCKS.
I'd sell you my sansa e250 for however much shipping costs if I wasn't so attached to it. ;_;

I use my Blackberry flip phone as my mp3 player. It has everything I need, always on me, isn't Apple, takes microSD cards, bluetooth, USB. Oh, did I mention it was absolutely free (as are many phones when you sign up for a cell service)? I doubt anyone can top that.

I use Sansa products these days. The Sansa Fuze is alright, if you're willing to pair a MicroSD card with a Sansa Clip+ you'll meet your 16 GB "need". I mostly use an assortment of 1 GB and 2 GB Sansa Clips - and I know my music library is orders of magnitude larger than yours.
The main weakness of the Sansa Clip+ is the clip element itself. I've designed a metal replacement but have yet to fabricate it.

16Gb will see me into the foreseeable future, yes.

I might get an 8gb Sansa Clip+ and get a MicroSD card if and when I run out, I have read very positive things about it. I was willing to spend more, but Sony clearly don't want my money.

I have a sansa fuze and its a peice of shit. its ugly, it has a fucking wheel instead of a touchpad to select songs, it crashes frequently and it likes to randomly refresh media when I turn it on- which takes 5 minutes- all the time. its also kinda ugly, and the lock/unlock button is really hard to switch in your pocket.
you do not want a sansa or an ipod.

Zune. I own an HTC surround (phone) which runs windows 7 mobile (and thus zune) and yes, shit is sleek. The phone also has sound quality enhancements I love. Yeah I cant stand apple products either.

The Sansa Fuze isn't really representative of the line. They currently have the Fuze, the View and the Clip+.
