As far as I'm aware, 90% of spamming comes from 3-4 guys who no one really knows anything about. Basically there are these massive major bot nets. They do things like making advertising deals with companies that pay them by the click, and then they email rape a billion people so people are more likely to click and they get more money without really doing real work.

What the spammers are doing is psuedo legal, it kind of fits in the same zone that protected the american mafia in the early days. What they appear to be doing from the outside is entirely legal, and even though everyone knows they are scummy bastards, no one can prove any of their illegal activities yet.

It's pointless to attack some random site because you got spam from them. Unless it's a porn or adult enhancement site, you honestly don't know if it's even dirty, there are so many online businesses that are getting strong armed by these guys for what is effectively protection money.

[edit] additionally, each of the bot nets is scary, apparently any one of them could collapse the internet if they didn't use it for their own profit. 4chan doesn't have shit on these guys, unless 1 or 2 of them happen to consider them selfs loyal to it.
