CHILI GAUNTLET! I'M THROWING IT DOWN!

I have played with the availlble ui frameworks and found chili to be my favorite. I know some of you don't like the default skin or think it runs slow due to widgets but I think it is the single best ui framework we have and I think a lot of people are bullshiting about Chili being a performance eater.

SO

I CHALLENGE YOU TO FIND AND PROVE CHILI IS SLOWER THAN IT SHOULD BE!

profiler shows multiple widgets spiking very high seemingly random (ie build icons, selection something, chat, ...), i get 5 FPS (or total screen freezing for multiple seconds) on scenes that I normally would have 100 FPS.
the screenfreeze is esp. nice at gamestart when you can start playing 30 seconds later than other players without that bug.
oolollol then just disable those widgets.
every time there is an update and for every game that uses chili?
and isnt zK kind of the "showcase" for chili and as such should be kind of stable in default config or something?
how many (new) players even know about profiler or how to disable widgets?

Just because it works for you does not mean it does work for everyone, there is even issues about it on zK svn ie
http://code.google.com/p/zero-k/issues/ ... %20Summary or simil- ah wait i didnt read thread

ok, so what widgets are slowing you at game load? don't say all that is useless have you tested to see which ones in particular?

as far as spiking, yes there are spikes in the unitinfo one, but those were addressed, how recent was your test?

how would i figure that out if the screen is frozen...

last time i played a game with chili was on 19-20 december. it was this 3d chat zK spinoff thing. looked like

of course that was a testmod thing with experimental stuff in it but tbh it was not so different from "the usual chili experience" ,with strangely positionied windows (despite just having dled the mod), luaui crash (see the screenshot with everything gone), then /luaui reload freezing spring for 2 minutes, low overall fps etc.

yes, there are always new fixes but it does get tiring after a while...
dont think normal players would stick around so long.

turn stuff off, run spring. if faster turn 1 thing on run spring and so on.

Ok, but say try it in gundam? still fps drop like crazy? If so, are you sure it is chili and not my f-ed up version of healthbars?

Are you runing MT?

DO you have a lot of things in your widget dir? Widgets can cause conflicts and issues. Other users of chili will never see. There was a gundam player who had insane issues until he nuked his lua dir and suddenly everything worked.

That is no excuse, this is a discussion between content developers. Thing are going to be experiments, saying "it doesn't work always" and refusing to look at it or using that as a rationale for hating something is not good.

I don't.
I do not have his issue but that comment is not helpful.

actually this is going to sound insane knorke, but could you zip your spring widgets dir up and upload it somewhere? I would like to see about this conflicts hunch I have.

It points out that it's not a general issue. It's probably specific to his setup or hardware.
And if that's the case it's helpful to know that because it makes it easier to track down the problem.

yes but could be a little clearer.

not running mt.
did not really intend this to be a bug report/search post anyway (iam not near my spring pc anyway), just explaining why the "chili hype" is annoying.
i will try out the healthbar in grts if i remember but see, that is exactly what i mean: different games use diff. versions of widgets/framework with different bugs or fixes and trying out all combinations, then restart etc. with no clue what is already known, fixed or "anybody just disables that anyway" is not motivating.
Sadly stuff like "healthbars in grts might be fucked" is very rare.
I obviously have no idea what widgets are problematic or in what combinations unless a game maker says so.
could you zip your spring widgets dir up and upload it somewhere?
yes sure, but i doubt it will be helpfull. there is only my own lua testcrap in it and something like factory_guard which came with spring (not sure)
Never used custom ui like iceUI or something unless it is in the mod.
I wont be at my spring pc until some days though.

What do you mean "chili hype?" We have bitched for years about how ui is a PITA so getting a good solid framework. So I am unsure about hype but I definitely would like to see it fixed before it really gets adopted. And it is getting adopted.

I don't think you guys should adopt chili but with the ease of development it gives content developers, I feel it is important to finally bite the bullet and try and get this shit running well.

"chili hype" = in every thread that is vaguely related to custom ui, the answer is "use chili."
For start, a setup guide would be nice. Then maybe a "demo mod" with a tested and basic selection of widgets.

Too right, a demo mod is needed.

ChiliUI has never lagged me or caused any noticeable lag apart from when chilitooltip was buggy but that got fixed and you can disable that anyway.

Every time i hear something in the sorts of "ah yeah that thing caused major issued but your a noob its fixed now come try it" i download latest ca/zk version and its unplayable due to lag for one reason or another.
Last few times it was cause of UI.

Chili never was finished.

Make that planned texture rendering path instead of ogl lists.

You are running spring at 1600x1125, resizing to 792x572, and then later resizing back to 1600x1125, and that is what gave you the strangely sized windows. Why do you not mention this anywhere? If you are actually here to be productive and not just trolling, please document everything you are doing to get your results.

because it is obvious from the resolution numbers under the thumbnails.
usually i run in window @1600x1200, some dozen vertical pixels are lost to taskbar/window frame blabla obv normally i do not resize spring all the time when i play.
anyway as i said the screens are from car's "3d chat zK spinoff thing" and i had uploaded them with infolog etc for him and without context they make little sense still they illustrate why i dont like chili blabla.
wtf why am i even justyfing myself in an allcaps thread.
