Easier to use Upspring

Like, why are there so many buttons?

Why is "Texture2" not called "Shinyness Texture" or whatever it does? (in b4 olol wiki)
Must the tool be that complicated? Probally yes, but it puts me off of unit making.

Programmers are notoriously bad at designing interfaces?

because texture 2 governs 3 different things and if a mod wants it can over ride the shader and do it's own thing.

Oh and it would be nice to have a dl link in
http://springrts.com/wiki/Download
Because if you use spring as a gamedev you can not do much without it.

I take it Knorke you have never tried gimp?
Or better yet, blender?

i just blender to render some stuff. ie i already had the models etc. just made textures.
so basically only moving the models around and rendering and i almost died.

gimp 2 is a lot better now... you don't have to right click the image to save anymore for instance.

Who needs Upspring?

I use it a lot.
No matter what my 3d modelling program preference is, as long as it can export to a format UPspring can read (and most mainstream ones can), i can make spring models.
I think I use 80% of the UPspring UI. Mostly never use the 'scrips', 'settings' and 'help' tabs, and 3do texture stuff. The rest mostly gets clicked on.
When I got some routine in basic animations, I started using UPspring to explore animation positions. I keep it open next to my text-editor.
I move an arm in UPspring, and write a corresponding line in a script, I turn a hand in UPspring and write it down too, etc...
After the unit has a few routines that look kinda good, UPspring gets replaced by Spring itself, and i start working in an opposite way, because I've got a 'feeling' or better understanding of how i want the unit to move. I write a few lines and then type "/luarules reload" to see the result.
Who doesn't need UPspring?

He might be talking about using .obj.

Blender is *hard* to get used to, but after a while you get into the groove with it and it becomes comfortable. But for the first bit, I agree, it's agony. Dragging crap when you mean to select it, rotating when you mean to pan, etc.

What's so bad about upspring? It's easy to get along with really.

It is easy to get along with. There isn't really anyhting in it that slows me down that wouldn't slow me down as much in wings.
All you need upspring for is rigging models, and that ISN'T hard, just time consuming (but doing it in wings wouldn't be any faster).

for one thing, why must i press "flip UV map" when everything looks ok in the preview? what use is a preview if it does not show what you will get.
also that "move origin" tool. how does that work? its impossible to put the red where you want it to be!
If i had to guess I would say the controls in XY YZ etc views are swapped. ie mouse pointer moves to right, red origin dot goes up?!

half assed shit like LOL DTX requires flipping but other texture formats don't so everything else has to be flipped in upspring.
