Trouble starting a game for the first time

I have a bit of a problem, I can't seem to figure out how to start a game in Spring

I downloaded the 'portable' version of Spring.
Then I downloaded the two games 'Conflict Terra' and 'Cursed'.
I copied the .sdz files to both the 'Mods' and 'Maps' folders.

But when I start Spring and select a mod, there are no maps listed under the maps directory, so the game won't start when I click 'Test the Game'.

Also, I'm not sure which AI I should select, as there doesn't seem to be anything related to the two games I downloaded.

What have I done wrong?

use a lobby, eg springlobby.exe instead of spring.exe directly. lobbies will also make it easy for you to download maps.

Bummer! Still no luck.

I tried using the lobby feature, but again, there were no maps listed, only the mods/games themselves. *Sigh* I just want to play a single player game against a computer opponent.

Could it be because I'm using the "portable" version of Spring? Should I download the other version and install it?

Get a few maps/mods from http://www.springfiles.com (I recommend sorting by popularity)
Then launch springlobby, and hit the single player button on the top, then select your map and mod from the drop-down lists on the bottom, click on the very bottom right to add a bot, and hit start!

Games tend not to include maps in the sdz file; you'll need to download some yourself, and put them in the /maps folder. http://www.springfiles.com/files.php?subcategory_id=2 is a good place to look.

Quick link to a map file: http://springfiles.com/download.php?mai ... .sd7&mnr=5

You forgot to add some maps into the maps folder. Get some from http://www.springfiles.com/
And remove the mods you put in the maps folder, mods go into mods folder only.

You assumed there would be working AI. There isn't, generally speaking. Spring is geared toward multiplayer games. Spring AI are difficult to install, target only TA derivatives and crash at the slighest breeze. A few mods come with "Lua AI" and "Chickens", which fill about the same niche as AI, but work much better. I don't know of any AI or other way to have singler player games of Cursed or Conflict Terra. I'll repeat: As of now, you cannot play Cursed or Conflict against AI. If you did what Beherith say, bots would either crash or do nothing.

If you just want to play Spring for the first time, any mod, just get it working without wasting hour fixing your Spring install, and if you are running windows, I would say: use Kernel Panic installer Contains engine, maps, mods, everything you need to play, no external file needed. Comes with shortcuts to single player menu that is way simpler to use than lobbies. But then that would be a little partial of me, since I made that KP installer.

RAI, E323AI and Shard all work for Conflict Terra.

That is not true for the Cursed - at least Shard, CAI and AAI can play the cursed. Here are the config files (CAI is config-less):

Shard:
http://azaremoth.supremedesign.org/data ... ackers.lua
http://azaremoth.supremedesign.org/data ... queues.lua
place them in \Spring\AI\Skirmish\Shard\ (then cursed subdirectory didn't work for me)

AAI:
http://azaremoth.supremedesign.org/data ... ed_022.cfg
in \Spring\AI\Skirmish\AAI\0.9\cfg\mod\

thanks :-)
i added the AAI config file to the spring repo, so it will be in the next mayor release. it uses the mod short name "tc", so it will be used for all versions of the mod. if it needs changes, give them to someone from the engine dev team, eg me.
