Multicore info for a noob.

So I used to play spring a while back and I'm starting to get into a little once again. I have some questions about the multicore situation. I did some searching through the forums and the FAQs and found some info but it seems to be very dependent on OS and some of the info seems to be outdated, so I figured the safest way was to ask.
Basically I'm running Windows 7 32bit on a slightly older dual-core Sony Vaio with integrated graphics. My question is, for best performance should I disable one of the cores (how?) or try to get spring MT running or just not worry about it? As it is I'm getting pretty lousy performance even with low settings and few units on the screen, and I suspect from my reading that this has something to do with multi-core issues. The included MT exe doesn't seem to work for me. When I launch "Test Spring" MT all of the buttons have squarish artifacts. If I remember correctly there is a simple fix for this but I don't remember what it is. Gggrrr I've forgotten so much from the old days.
BTW how do you display FPS in-game?
Thanks in advance,
Aztek
