spam/muting in #main

why does one get muted so fast lately?
also the mute is 30minutes?
thats quite long for a noob if he accidently the whole infolog.txt instead of pastebin.
the server or bot should just block the message then or mute for 1 minute.
only mute for repeated offenders.
all the mutes i have seen were really stupid and annoying.
if players get muted for something like
line 1: join my awesome game!
line 2: get mod here:
http://www.ablabalbaldfbadfb
[01:22] [Fx]Aether the evaluator is only using those 2 variables
[01:22] [Fx]Aether so based on those 2 variables it would be a ton harder
[01:23] [Fx]Aether like back to my unfinished example with some guy telling you what's going on
[01:23] Channel message: [Fx]Aether was muted for spamming.
[19:27] [RoX]knorke play a game on the 1v1 BA host! the knorkebot will analyze your game.
[19:27] Channel message: [RoX]knorke was muted for spamming.
[19:27] Channel message: You are muted for the next 29.7 minutes..
[19:32] [Mr]Monsieur 1 line = spaem!

pasting two decent-length lines at the same time in #main is spam, expect to get muted
changed mute duration to 15 mins

hm already a modlink plus a maplink would probally be two decent-length lines. or a youtube link with a description.

Tbh I don't even care if somebody does spam #main. If having to see a few messages for half a second is supposed to be a disadvantage to me then I'll quite happily tolerate it in order to also be able to read funny and/or useful long messages.
Imo you should add a mute warn so if somebody hasn't been muted in say 3 days, their next mute turns into a warning and then if they spam again after that, it actually mutes them.

Wait, the server doesnt even display the spam, but you get muted for it?
...
Whats the point?

SERIOUSLY? YOU ARE ACTUALLY NOT JOKING WHEN YOU ASK THIS?

I think something along the lines of an automated warning (while blocking the outgoing message) on the first "offense" - only causing a mute when the behaviour is repeated - would be highly beneficial.

My point is, the server will receive your messages even if you got muted, it only ignores further processing, right?
So... whats the point muting me if i spam the server? Shouldnt the correct action be a kick from the server?
I would suggest to kick the user if he spams like 100 lines in short sequence, then if user repeats this: server would ban him for a hour. And not do anything if you spam 99 lines. Others would see 1 message when you sent 99 messages, but if you send 100 messages, people see 1 message and you get kicked.

you could still spam the server with login requests, when kicked. the main reason for spam protection is not to free the server from too much load, but to not annoy all the users that would receive the spam

Yeah, but now they cant even receive the spam anymore, so the muting should be removed then

no it shouldn't. People who spam need consequences to let them know that spamming is not ok.
However, I do think that presently the spam filter is a bit too strict. I can see 3 lines being borderline, but as knorke said, if someone posted a map and modlink I really don't think that should count as spam.
all the mutes i have seen were really stupid and annoying.
pretty much sums it up. I had to manually unmute someone in #main because they got muted while helping a newbie. I mean come on... the filter needs to relax a little bit.

I agree, thoughts on this Aegis?

Well, making a contextual filter isn't impossible, but making one which is useful is a little more time consuming. I'd be fine with a hard limit of five or six in an arbitrary period of time supported with a contextual limit of two or three links in a larger period of time.

I hate how you said that... because most people who get muted ARENT trying to spam at all. You can get muted if your internet lags: server will receive all messages at same time.
As i said before, its better to punish the REAL spammer, who spam LOTS, like 100 lines...
Or just change the minimum spam mute lines to 10 or something, 3 is too little since we are getting random people muted so much!
---
IMHO punishments should be made only if they affect other people... Like punishing someone if he is thinking to kill someone isnt ok IMHO. Thats kinda same here, you get punished from what you didnt even do to anyone yet.
Lol, starting to think about the movie where people got in jail from their future actions which didnt happen yet

Thats pretty much how this spam mute is here

Good movie, but no it's not like Minority Report. People are getting muted for spamming after the fact that they spammed, the issue is defining how much text is spam.

How is it spamming if nobody saw the spam? You cant hurt server with 3 lines message "spam", come on...!
Server only needs to be sure to kick the real spammers that interfere the servers ability to work as a server... although, as said before, protecting the server from any kind of spam is impossible. So therefore its pointless to mute anyone if they "spammed" with few lines of text... if someone wanted to fuck up your server, he would do it better than spamming #main
The server only pissess off the real people who arent even intending to hurt the Server, because there might be ONE
blind troll who thinks spamming #main will make people mad even though nobody can see his spam.
GET REAL

All I said was your analogy was bogus. If the server prevents showing spam when someone tries to spam, it's not the same as your claim that it's like "looking into the future to see if someone is going to spam." Attempted murder is against the law just like murder is. Your analogy was wrong.
And now I must repeat myself since you didn't read me the first time. Defining what constitutes spam is a separate issue and it's the issue of this thread.

How is an unbroadcast gag on your messages sent any better than a visible mute?
