map idea !

this is something i had in my mind for ages...

but i lack skill and intrest to make such a map...

its no porcher friendly map so it will have lots of battles in the middle of the map...

heres the idea. u have green grassy land and theres core metal under the grassy green land... threres huge "hole" in middle of the map where the all core metal is seen and few metal towers (features) to keep the map look more intresting and give some cover :-)

I think its a cool idea... Almost an niverted core prymaid...

I'd love to make the map, but you'll have to wait while other ones are being made... can't make a new map evryday after all. If anyone else wants to awell thats fine, but I think I will do one like this.

somewhat bigger than metalheck...
and its supposed to have VERY little metal on the edges :-)

i dont want map that goes into krogoth fights...

Ohh, really neat concept. I expecially like the pit aspect because it means VERY open LoSs and extreamly effective artillery bombardment. Should make for some furious games.

it would definatley want to be a huge map. Having most of the hole covered by a lone pup-up cannon would suck. Mabey make it so big that a bertha can only JUST shoot from one side of the hole to the other. Or bigger. Bigger is good. But bigger makes for a larger file size... You would have to be carefull with that, cause those blended edges would not compress to well.

There's no reason it'd have to be a huge filesize. If you properly tiled everything it'd be decently sized. You're right, most of the filesize would come from the blended parts, but even those wouldn't be significant really. It'd look better if it wasn't perfectly blended (on the terrain map, that is), but instead looked as if the greenery was slowly over-growing the metal, kind of in a similar appearance to the green on the sand of this tileset: http://fileuniverse.com/?p=showitem&ID=683

That'd probably compress better too.

Well if its done like that, then there is no real restriction on the file size at all. Make it as big as your image editing program can allow!

Or maybe make it like Core Pyramid? Seeing as that way rocks? Obviosly Ill make the transition bigger though. And would 24 x 24 be to small? I suppose I could go 32 x 32 but thats a bugger to do quickly (will take maybe 4 times longer than a 24 x 24) Also... as you would know from all my maps, I'm the master of small file sizes.

On the gameplay side, should there maybe be a few spires of terrain in the middle of the hole? And should it have limited acces to the hole or just gently slope into it like the current HM?

Finaly what sort of sky box do you reckon? Custom or built in?

id like the hole to be very easy to access so it will be pain to defend... but u still gotta go there cause all the metal is there... i personally dont think the skybox is important cause i look into the sky so very rarely :wink:

Yep, gently sloping walls. But it still needs to be a very large hill. Big enough t hide a small, or even large army behind the hill. Including its air support. And the spires in the middle sound good, just dont make them TO easy to defend. Just a slight advantage to who ever holds them. Just for a reference, how big is 24x24, and 32x32? what other maps are that big?

anglo saxon = 24x24
wide open combat = 24x24
acidbridge = 32x16

i don't know any map that is 32x32

Just because it's simplistic doesn't mean it has to be featureless. You could add a few small, bumpy hills for flavour, some trees, etc. A nice massive feature-structure down in the middle would be fun.

Plus, the metal-low area could have some reclaimable features in it to help tide the players over until they can invade the middle.

The whole point of the map is to fight for the middle metal, if you can have the metal in the middle without your opponent shelling it he's done something wrong. Conversely you've done something wrong if he is has metal that you aren't shelling. I think a single popup should be pretty close to total floor from one side of the hole to the other and a bertha should be way over the range. If the fighting isn't boarderline constant on the map it has been designed wrong.

[edit] I'd argue that 24x24 is too large for the design of this map.
