Setting up a 2-player lan

EDIT:
OK, seriously, here's a crazy idea:
Every client has an option to create a spawn installer. For this installer, you can select any or all the mods, maps, and scripts you want installed, and they will be packaged and ziped into a single convenient, 1-file installer for whatever OS you would want.
Also, package the LAN server in all the installers. Every one of them.

If you download the spring installer, it has SD, which facilitates everything you just mentioned.

aehm.. no.
he is talking about LAN games (eg, no access to internet/main lobby server).
Though TASServer (an old version) is already in the installer, and for LAN play, that surely is enough. On non Windows OS, applications do usually not get installed through installers. But yeah.. as much as i know, we do not have packages for any of the lobby servers on any Linux OS.
If someone (package maintainers) wants to do that, i am available for help.

I'm aware of that, but I'm also aware that installing nearly anything on an ubuntu box requires internet, so your statement is a little flawed (logistically) (imo).

dial up connection, should you have to ring up to play with your brother at home? Im sorry but I realy cant see any reason i cant just play in my lan without any dramas or any statistic gathering or concerns of piracy(starcraft2). TA was easy direct connect! Just my 2 cents.
& no i dont really have dial up but my mum does
cheers

I like this idea. Implementation would be difficult, though, especially the linux stuff (though, if you already have the engine, things are simplified greatly). Is anybody going to actually do this, though?

for windows, there is the portable installer.
for linux, you can just install everything into one dir (windows style), and copy that dir to someone elses PC. The same you could do with windows too btw, it does not need to be installed, as there are no registry entries.
the only thing you need in addition to the default install/compile from source, is a lobby server. you just download/install it once, and then have it in your portable spring dir, and when copying that to others PCs, you can use it there too...
Really no need to bitch around here, it is nearly as simple as can get, and we wont maintain a super special built scenario for one user, cause if you can not setup this yourself, you would also never find the link to this setup on our download page.

If you run your own server.exe for lan play the internet is never used.
If you want to play over the internet without using the official server that is possible too, you might want to use a virtual network program like hamachi though. Otherwise you have to enter the painfull world of routers, ips and portnumbers.

Go do it! Things get done when you do them! If you have any questions about how to get started, feel free to ask!
