Arm Samson WIP

Post by Hobo Joe »

Hopefully the first of many upgraded OTA models, if things go smoothly I can probably pump them out pretty quick.

Anyway, this is my first attempt, after familiarizing myself with the ins and outs of all the various formats, and trying to do good low poly modeling which I have little experience with. For now at least I'm going to stick very closely to the OTA designs and just attempt to add to the detail, and try not to go off onto too many tangents.

This is a WIP so all input is welcome.

Also, roughly what poly count should I shoot for? I'm guessing I should try and keep it under 1000, right now it's about 650tris without optimization.

I say you can go for 1000 tris, gfx hardware wont get any worse.

Greebles. I'll probably end up removing the pipes but I felt like there needed to be something there. I'll start optimizing and then unwrap it and investigate the texturing a bit.

Spring supports normal maps? Damn I must live in a hole in the ground.

Good Work! Although you should probably know that derivative works are still covered under IP.

Tell that to Mr. D and Regret. Besides, I don't really care. I'm doing this because I love the OTA models and I want to do my best to improve them, not because I want to free some mod from a pie-in-the-sky IP.

IMO should have less greebles (can be added with texture) and more moving parts. IE animated treads, cool unfolding bits, stuff that can get blown off when damaged, etc.

What modeling software is that?

I'm going to turn the greebles into normal maps, since apparently Spring supports those, which I didn't know before. Treads can be animated via texture, I will probably end up using something similar to Mr. D's vehicles for this. As for moving parts, maybe on another model, partially because I think this one should be fairly simple just due to the design, but also because I'm using this model as a learning process to familiarize myself with how to go from A to Z for creating a model, texturing it, and getting it into Spring, so extra complexity will only slow that down.

And nope, not a smurf, this is just the first time I've actually gotten around to working on some OTA models, something which I've wanted to do for a long time.

Made with Blender.

E: Does Spring actually support damage models? i.e. parts falling off/getting bent.

It looks nice, but there wont be much noticiable difference at all compared to retexturing the old samson.

We can all see what it looks like just fine, honestly, and it's not a lot different than how it'd come out of AO or a lightbake.

Maybe release some screens of your own work for people to critique before acting like this in a newbie's thread, mr. negative.

I'm not trying to make it look like an overhaul of the original, just give more detail to it. The model already looks fine at far zoom, this will just make it look better at mid-close views.

Didn't feel like setting up lighting, it's just AO.

Only if you have someone who can rewrite the unit script in your team.

Rattle, I very much like yours, and would like to try to texture it (havent textured units before) would you care to share the model file?
