The creator of Mynn has released his new Xect race under the GNU GPL.

Quote from Chris Jorgensen (xenoclone)
"Feel free to use and mod for the Spring project at will."
So now, how do we get this ported to the Spring engine?

I'm not a genius... but I did figure out that those .xen files are acctually .ufo renamed... started poking at this stuff again...

^Yes, they are just UFO files renamed. I then made a special EXE that looks for .xen in place of .ccx. That's all there was to it.
If you need any of the files, just let me know.

I have quite a bit of practice at porting TA mods that I never released to everyone else.
I'm at my parents' place now. When I get back home, I'll port it myself. Without an updated lobby, it won't be fully online compatible (Partially though, yes), but I'm confident it will be fully working later tonight.

Just Make a Xect vs Mynn mod for now. It will be fully lobby complient except for the little ARM/CORE Logos and Names... When we have 4 races people want to play with then the fellow who makes the lobby client might have enough encouragement to include support...

I've bugged Betalord about it. He told me to bug Fnordia since the engine apparently needs a bit of work as well to sync more than two teams. So I did, and I got a "I'll look into it" or something like that so... I guess we'll see.

someone could make a morphing unit... would somehow replace itself with the team commander you want to start with maybe... they had sometyhing like this in the whole TA-Mutator thingy...

Yeah, there is... Luckily, he left the Unitpics folder complete, so I won't have to mess with converting the buildpics. Sadly, all of yesterday no progress was made, due to interference with RL(tm). This afternoon, I should have it fully working, but if not then check tomarrow.

With the Xect replacing Arm/Core, Spring can be released as freeware, or even resold - after all, at that point the remaining Cavedog content would be gone. With Linux versions it could be bundled into distros.

It's very likely that the Xect also references to TA textures, sounds, etc..

We can't bundle spring with a linux dist because it's constantly being updated.
However, you could bundle a downloader, which gets the latest spring build, plus Mynn+Xect mod. Then people could just dl TA and TA based mods by themselves.

All big projects in linux are constantly being updated, that doesn't stop people from including them in distro's.
However I think that spring is too big to be included in a distro, there are a couple of other free opensource games that work on linux too and don't get included either. I don't know how accurate this is though, since my linux cd's are not very recent

Size and good 3D drivers have been a problem on you RH8 distro cd's.
But that's not a issue anymore.
Slamoid, how are you progressing?

The wreckage in the Xect references Cavedog textures. It *might* reference a weapon or two as well. Since neither have to be included in the download, you can still release it under GNU since it doesn't redistribute Cavedog files.
The Mynn, however, should be 100% original. So you could do a quick scan of the Xect and replace its Cavedog references with Mynn references. The Xect doesn't work without the Mynn anyway, so it's a natural extension imo.
If you guys ever do distribute Spring widely, I'd love a little line somewhere that said "Xect/Mynn provided by xenoclone.com"

Get it into the Debian package manager. afaik, you can update those as frequently as you like. Then, Debian-based game distros like the gaming-knoppix distro and such can just grab the newest version when bundling.
