Main Menu Not Opening Ingame

When I play BalancedTA 7.12/Spring 0.8.1.2 I am unable to open the main menu. Pressing Esc or Shift+Esc does nothing.
This means that the only way for me to exit a running game is to kill all my units, as the end screen does show with the option to exit.
What might be the problem?
