in case you want any half way usable answers, you have to get much more specific ;-)
you know.. when does it happen, your settings (and don't say you did not change anything, just give setting ok?), ... you know.. think about, think-think about it!

Hi guys, I'm experiencing the same problem. It's only happened since I upgraded to the newest spring engine and lobby today. I'm on Linux (ubuntu) and since I couldn't find any other way to install, I compiled both from source -Spring 0.81.1.3 and SpringLobby 0.63.

When playing a game, everything starts out fine, but CPU usage gradually climbs until about the 16 minute mark or so it becomes unplayable and by the 20 minute mark it's like 1 frame every few seconds.

I have an athlon 64 x 2 4200+, which obviously isn't a dream machine, but before the spring upgrade it was fine.

Any ideas?

Cheers

post infologs, and in case you have ati graphics, disable reflective/refractive water.

Also, press alt+b ingame (when it is slow) and observe what is taking most of the cpu time, then report back please.

I noticed event on previous version that water rendering (i use dynamic water settings) takes too much (about 14-20%) even if it is not visible in my viewport.

Hi all, thanks for your replies - I've attached the infolog from my latest game, which like usual started to become unplayable before 20 mins, so I had to unload my units to an ally.

I pressed alt-b, and the 3 biggest CPU users were 'simulation' followed by the 2 'draw' ones.

I'm using an NVidia card, and also on very low settings to try and get a smooth game. ie. no shadows, basic water etc.

Any ideas?

Cheers

As i see that man connected with an older version:

Code: Select all

[ 0] Connection attempt from Vrekrer
[      0]  -> Version: 0.81.0.0
and constantly caused desyncs.

After trying a few more times, the thing which is eating up the CPU mid game for me is resoundingly 'Sim Time'. Does anyone know what that is, or have any ideas to reduce its impact?

Thanks in advance

Sim time makes all objects in the game behave like they should.
FYI, changing game or graphics settings will _not_ help reduce the Sim Time.

So basically, if the sim time is going nuts there's nothing I can do? Just a bug in the new version of spring?

Correct. But it does not hurt to try a clean reinstall, disable all widgets, and perhaps install the multithreaded Spring version. Also check if the problem is the same with all mods (use an older version of the mod).

Hi, thanks for your advice.

SpringLobby was also giving me bad CPU problems, so I changed to qtLobby which is fine. So even though Spring has the same sim-time eating problem which it had before, I can now play games at least without CPU-lagging out completely.

I can confirm this. SpringLobby is a horrible abomination that should not be presented to the public.

qtlobby is unbelievably better, even on Gnome

certain linux distros ( most notably ubuntu ) ship a bugged openal that causes this, both SpringLobby and Spring uses it, so both are equally affected, just for a lobby it's more easily noticeable to eat 100% cpu than Spring ...
if you want to rage, blame on the distro/package maintainers
