ORTS - Lots of content!

ORTS is an open source RTS engine. Doesnt look like much looking at
the page, but they have a
lot of models.
Screenshot from
2005:
'ORTS is free software. It is licensed under the GNU public license (GPL).'
The last time that webpage was updated significantly was 2005, but the game is still being worked on at least up to 2009. I cant find any better webpages for it though.
You can get all the content here:
svn://
anonymous@bodo1.cs.ualberta.ca:/all/pubsoft/orts_dat
They are in the quake 3 model format, MD3. An MD3 importer for blender can be found here:
http://www.moddb.com/games/quake-iii-ar ... xport-tool
Here is one in spring. Its not much, but its better than a lot of the stuff we are getting on with.
Ill take a look at some others, there are probably at least a few good ones, for chickens and the like.

AFAIK Devourers are still copyrighted by Blizzard.
Wasn't ORTS the name of that project for a better RTS engine that split from Spring and never took off?

Clearly that is a
mutalisk.
Tyranid Gargoyle
Flying Alien Queen
Wasp with bat wings
Given the liberal history of 'borrowing' even in mainstream RTS's i think we can forgive a bit of derivativeness.

would spring run faster with a blocky non round LOS calculator?

Oops, yeah sorry. That I could recognize it without even knowing the name show how much an iconic unit it has become!

That was OSRTS. ORTS is an AI research platform mostly.

Package the MD3s / skins, and I'll be happy to export as much as I can, just like the Glest stuff.

Best that you release the Glest stuff first Argh, its better quality generally (though the mobiles have to all be cut up, which requires more UV room and other stuff).
Spring will soon(ish) support importing md3 directly though. :D

The fact that they ripped the zerg of of warhammer 40k, down to the 'wasp-striking' pose lizard tail on a bat-winged unit, and even down to some of the details, like the bone-coloured chitin armour over brightly coloured skin:

Is a testament to how powerful Blizzard are in the cultural consciousness.
Anyway, here are these goofy looking things, probably suitable for chickens, features, or some project though.
And a fairly sub-par turret. :/
You are right about it being Starcraft though zwzsg: The unit list is almost identical. 3 factions, 'terrans, bugs, and pantheon' (mysterious smooth-shape alien guys) etc.

The Glest stuff's already in WB, ready to go. I can't export the mobiles- I tried, and Blender crashed on me, every time

Now those Tyranids Gargoyles are a much more convincing proof than the first ones.

What about Remobras?

nicely discovered.... for my money those flying buggers remind me of the cliffracers from morrowind

Is the content really GPL? On the webpage they are just talking about:
ORTS is free software. It is licensed under the GNU public license (GPL). This means that all source code of ORTS is available, changable, and freely redistributable. It also means that publicly available applications using ORTS source code must also be licensed under the GPL.
They are not too informative about themodels, textures and so on.
It is graet stuff in any case. It would be great if we could use it.

need vertex-based animations in Spring, badly. I haven't touched C++ in a decade, but I'm always tempted to see how hard it would be to get simple interpolated keyframed vertex-based animations (IE Quake 2/3 stuff) onto the existing model parts. Although that approach does tend to produce enormous file sizes compared to using bones (which also makes them too large for vertex shaders, unfortunately).

F@))&@"ing cliff racers!
Neat find but I would not say better than what I am using.

Id say this applies to the content. Its a tad ambiguous but im pretty sure this content was made specifically for the engine and are all the same project: They are as GPL as the rest of it.
I may be wrong, but pending evidence to the contrary i think its a safe good faith assumption that nobody could fault us on. If you're worried about using them and getting them pulled later when someone objects, i'd go hunt down the developers of ORTS (they should still be around) and ask. Im pretty sure the content will be as GPL as the rest of it.

Uh yeah you dont say. Of course not. You are smoth.
Anyway i might convert a few more of those bugs for the chickens, but most of the sci-fi 'terran' models are really low quality. If anyone wants the ones i've done so far just ask.

Guys get over it, all the stuff you are citing comes after SC and after WH40k. Its well established that SC ripped WH40k off substantially, and ORTS is clearly ripping off SC.

Seriously Mother nature. Stop ripping off computer games!
And BTW. ORTS is actually a very cool concept. From memory it actually seperates client protocols entirely from the server side engine so you can "play" the game using AI, scripts and custom clients written in any network-aware language. They don't consider it cheating, in fact they absolutely encourage it.
