I need some help making a large map

I'm a bit different from most when it comes to maps. I like big maps and I try to make big maps. For the longest time I thought the limit was 32*32 on map size... Then I found Epic, a 40*40 map, which after some more reading seems to the the largest that can be done at the moment. Anyway I'll get to the point. Epic is pretty cool in concept but it lacks water and thus it does not allow for a navy. I tried making a 40*40 map but Spring Map Edit tells me that i don't have enough RAM to do so. The largest i can go is 34*34. So if any of the other mappers with more beastly machines wanted to get with me and help me make a better 40*40 map(s?). I've got plenty of ideas. So if anyone wants to help please reply. Oh and I apologize for the rambling nature of this post. I'm a rambling man i guess...

Long story short, you're not going to be able to use SME for large maps. Bout the only thing you'll get away with is mapconv and photoshop.

Mapconv has a hard limit of 500mb on the texture map... SO in reality the limiting factors are RAM and that pesky 500mb limit (mapconv only supports bmp and jpg, so even if you did use jpeg, your map would look like swiss cheese by the time mapconv got done fucking it over).

If your into coding, your best bet would be to checkout the mapconv git repo, and compile it for a 64bit system. Then you should be able to hit 64x64.

This might just be me, but I dont think that compressing your texture into a highest quality jpg is all that bad, its hardly noticeable since its gonna get DDS compressed as well.

SME:
Depending on your system 32bit/64bit and your installed ram,
you can increase the maximum allowed java memory inside the startup file (.bat / .sh):
You need to modify:
-Xmx1024m
to something higher. Just make it a little lower than your installed ram,
and try to use multiples of 128m:
-Xmx1536m for 2GB installed RAM (sufficient for 40*40 map)
-Xmx2048m for more than 2GB RAM on 32bit. (may fail due to 32bit)
-Xmx3584m for 4GB RAM on 64bit.
etc...

Just test values. If it starts up, it is ok ;)

For 64x64 you would theoretically need 4GB ram minimum,
but I did not test this.
Also you would want to reduce the rendered area, if it runs to slow.

Good luck,
Frostregen
