Competitive play / ladder

What Spring really is lacking is competitive play.
I already proposed this in the Brainstorming 2010 thread, but what about implementing a ladder server? It would be administrated by one of the developers/moderators.
Every mod maintainer can register his mod with the administrator. Every player then has a separate rank for each mod. Ladder games can be played on autohosts set up by the administrator for each mod, which give feedback of the results to the ladder server.
I also think this would make underplayed mods more attractive, and encourage 1v1 or 2v2 play.
I have no clue of the technical aspects of spring, so maybe it need to be implemented differently, but I think the general idea is nice.
edit: i believe a working and well maintained ladder (maybe accompanied by planetwars), accessible on an aesthetically pleasing game (sounds better than mod) homepage (still to make for BA, CA etc.), is crucial for player retention. drastically speaking, all we do right now is basically fucking around in a DSD sandbox.

there was once a laddersystem with nice pocals and ladderserver/games, but it was broken or something (dunno why its not there anymore)

It broke because of several changes in the engine. Instead of fixing it up, I decided to pretty much start over to add some features and learn from a few experiences of the first system.
It will be back soonish..

A lack of competitive play is just a result of a stagnant community...Need new players that enjoy competitive play.
Unless OP is willing to put everything up himself he have difficulty in finding actual people that are interested in making a ladder and not just posting about the desire to make one.

That doesn't mean I haven't started. I would guess I'm about 60-70% done. And I think I already proved that I don't only talk about doing stuff although I have to admit that this is taking longer than I wanted it to.

I was not talking about you.
If it wasn't for you we wouldn't have had one in the first place.
I was just saying that ATM there are not many players who even interested in competitive play so its no wonder there isn't a lot of motivation and therefore coders to make one..
I want a ladder but will i do anything to make it happen?No.nothing at all,since i feel it is kinda pointless for the spring community ATM.
And i am sure others have similair views on the matter.
Imagine if we had hundreds of players screeming for a ladder...I am sure we would have one by now...

It takes people willing to promote and run ladder matches, it also took ladder autohosts. I can do that, a little organization of that nature is effortless for me, and I am still on tap to manage the ladder once Mel gets it back up. I even have two options for super-admin I'm preparing.

i enjoyed seeing the trophies in the lobby.
tbh i would have loved to see more logos like the trophy, perhaps something for being in the top 20 of a ladder, and the top 50.
thanks for the hard work meltrax, i was garbage at pretty much every spring mod when the old ladder was around, but if a new one appears, im sure i'll take a crack at it!

edit: By the way: You might have noticed that I made a pretty big IceUI release today. With that out of the way I'll try to finish the ladder now. Don't get to excited though because I wanted to do that for weeks now.

If Mel adds more and the lobbies decide to support it I will provide basic icons and logos for them. I'm also tooling around with some recognizable ladder symbols.
