TASClient

Ok so now TASClient is working in Vista but its highly unstable. Freezing all the time, take way longer to load, and crashing over silly little things.

Why cant we have a good old version of TAS that works?

Yup, TAS Client is now more of an obstacle. Because Satirik can't really code TAS Client to mold around Spring and devs cba to mold Spring around TAS Client, I propose you just get rid of TAS Client from the installer and stop all support for it all together. Just make it a third party client. If people want it to work, they should complain to Satirik and Satirik only.

As much as I love TAS Client and would rather use it than the other lobbies, it really just has to go.

As it looks to me, Satirik just does not want to depend on anyone else, or do htings how or when others want him to do it. If this is hte case, then i can understand him very well there. Thing is just, that he can not get rid of the strong dependency to spring, coding a lobby for spring.

That is just what the Spring devs wanted you to think, by purposely leaving a broken Spring.exe in their installer. My TASClient works very fine, and yeah indeed it's much more useable than SpringLobby. SpringLobby devs couldn't do a better product than TASClient, so they decided to use their connections with Spring devs to kill TASClient by introducing change in the multiplayer protocol while Satirik was away. And when Satirik updated TASClient, they made sure to ignore it, and keep the old (and now broken by their fault) version in the installer, despite being linked numerous time to a working one, over the span of several monthes (this date from 0.79 releases). When a player complains, instead of fixing the error by using the correct TASClient version, they let Satirik be blamed for something that is not his but their fault, and attempt to force SpringLobby over unspecting users desperate to play again. See also how they now let people blame TASClient for the dreaded desyncs even thought it has absolutly nothing to do with it.

you conveniently forget that is was Satirik who forced SL on every last tasclient user that had auto update enabled a couple of months back?

hey it's really simple - it would've taken exactly one line in the #sy chat or two lines on mantis to tell us where to get a new exe because old one is broken. NOBODY did it in the last two weeks, when it was clear a new spring will be released soon.

we cannot test everything. remember we do all this in our spare time.

Also, i agree totally that its a test issue about the outdated tasclient in the installer.

anyone should have reported that.

but, has it been fixed already? i mean in the current installer?
is it that hard to change the file in the server?
or it cant be changed if you dont modify the installer exe?

the latest tasclient works fine for me on both xp and vista
no crashes
no lags
no disconnects

the tasclient included in the installer is old and defunct, yes
http://tasclient.licho.eu/
the latest one should be here

i don't really understand what's going on actually, the only problem of the version left before i got on vacation was the old LuaAI functions removed from unitsync (and not used in tasclient though), i just removed them and it works again, i guess the installer had a really old version of tasclient before someone update it for the latest one which couldn't start because of the deprecated functions, otherwise i don't see how it could

, but i uploaded a new version, plus jaz you don't have to use tasclient and it's not installed by default for new users, with a big "old and unmaintained blabla" warning that shouldn't make anyone installing it

I've always used TAS Client and will continue using it until I become unable too. I'm glad you're still updating it but the majority of the devs are against TAS Client so I can see this being quite a hard battle for you.

I've updated to the latest version just now and I'm glad to say, 4 of the errors I used to get every time I used it are now gone :) However, I still get "Spring RTS has crashed" everytime I close TAS Client but that's ok I guess :D

Most the devs I've spoken too are against it. Majority is not all.

most devs i spoke to couldn't care less. that's not "being against". what they're against are certain rather irresponsible behaviours (like piggybacking springlobby as a tasclient upgrade).

satirik seems to be making an honest effort atm to provide and maintain and working client which has many users. anything like that springlobby upgrade should be left in the past. TASClient is good now, so theres no reason to treat it any differently than spring lobby

many people use the installer to install spring. keeping a broken copy of tasclient on this widely used installer will hurt TASClient

and im only stating the obvious here

i completely agree. as long as it works and is updated, it deserves to be in the installer in a non-broken form. the problem here was that we didn't got the info that it was broken during the time _two_ engine release candidates were released.

Qt_lobby looks promising, but I'm in agreement with most everyone here that TASClient is much much better by far than SpringLobby.

Support needs to continue for TASC, seriously as its the most complete, and manageable interface so far.

Spring Lobby just sucks ass, its clunky, slow, visually looks crappy and doesn't have the same functionality or as many nice features as TASC.

unfortunately im stuck using this SpringLobby cos when I try to use TAS Client it says:
TASCLIENT.exe - Entry point Not Found
The procedure entry point GetLuaAIName could not be location in the dynamic link library UnitSync.dll

I had the same problem. I solved it by :

1) un7zip http://springrts.com/dl/spring_0.80.2.7z

2) un7zip http://tasclient.licho.eu/TASClientLatest.7z
